Riders grab receiver Kevin Francis in CFL supplemental draft

The Riders gave up a 2017 third round CFL draft pick to grab North Carolina A&T receiver Kevin Francis in the supplemental draft on Tuesday.

McMurry offensive lineman Rafael Gallo and Delaware State defensive lineman Jacob Tizzard were also available, but no team was willing to bid a draft selection for their services.

Francis was viewed as a bit of an unknown quantity because he missed most of the Aggies’ 2015 season with a knee injury, playing in just two games. The six-foot-five, 210 pound pass catcher ran the 40-yard dash in the 4.7 range at the North Carolina A&T Pro Day while recording a 4.50 shuttle, 7.40 three-cone, 10-foot six-inch broad jump, 37-inch vertical leap and he pumped out 18 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press.

One CFL personnel man says a third rounder was a “hefty? price to pay. That said, there were five teams who bid on Francis and at least one was willing to give up a third, but Saskatchewan had the top waiver priority.

Scouts see Francis as a big, physical prospect who is a willing blocker and very good on coverage teams.

Evidently the Riders didn't learn anything from the Bombers foolish supplemental picks of Gar Waggoner and Kito PooPoo.

Elaborate... where are Waggoner and Popo now?

If you have to ask...

Although it seems a touch early to write off Waggoner just yet. :?

Gar Waggoner is currently with the Bombers and had a grand total of 7 ST tackles and 1 defensive tackle last year.

Kito PooPoo is currently on the scrap heap. In four CFL seasons he totaled 299yds and 1 TD.

Ted Laurent?

3rd round seems pretty high to be picking him up. He seems to have the frame a club would like and he is obviously a good athlete as he ran hurdles, but 3rd round is pretty high. You only need to look at 2015 draft to see there are a lot of reasonable 1st year contributors and promising players (Adam Konar for the Esks seems to be the steal of the round) to understand that if he does not get some level of rotations in 2016 he would be a poor pick up, at least short term.

Nothing wrong with rolling the dice if you think they have a legit chance of making the team, it is getting a next year draft today essentially.
