Riders cheat SMS for second consecutive season

Wow! I think its time for the big market teams to get ride of the SMS

HfxTC makes a mountain out of a molehill for the second consecutive season ...

Legal bagel shows bias for the second consecutive season. At least your not throwing beer cans at me

Call it bias if you want, but I'd be saying the same thing for Montreal last year and any other team this year or any other year going forward (wait till your favourite team runs out of the pre-SMS frontloading poeriod ... I won't be on your back). It is NOT a CAP.

Would I have preferred that the Riders not be over the SMS threshold? Sure, but not because it is "cheating", but because it means another year of putting up with this kind of ignorant (and I don't mean that perjoratively, I mean it in the sense of "don't know"/"don't understand") commentary.

My question is how would the draft pick thing worked out had Saskatchewan spent an extra 13 grand.

You are welcome to come to sunny Taylor Field anytime and maybe we can fix the “not throwing beer cans” part for you…
With the massive number of injuries the Riders sustained in 2008, being only 87,000 over the cap is very impressive. I believe at one point we had 21 players on the injured list. I know in one game at least, we only had 3 starters on offence, and were playing 9 Canadians.
And for the record, " the SMS is not a hard cap, and as we have paid our fine, it is silly to even refer to it as “cheating”.

Likely lost draft picks would carry forward to next year—I do not believe it is in the rules to take away players already under contract.

Here is how TSN thought it would work:

The Riders don't have a first-round pick in this year's draft, so had they been more than $100,000 over the cap, they would've forfeited their first available pick this year and continued to do so until they lost a first-round selection. As well, Saskatchewan would've been unable to include any draft picks in a trade until they gave up a first-rounder.
I'm almost disappointed we didn't go over another 13 grand--then the Riders could have just stayed home on draft day.....

Arius the injuries are a seperate issue. The Riders used the nine game injury list with guys that weren’t even injured for nine games. Those numbers don’t count. If they did I think you would see an even bigger disaprity between the Riders and the other teams.

Cheating the SMS…not the same as saying the Riders are cheaters. Two consecutive years coming in around 10k below losing a pick is “budgeted” IMO.

There is already a thread on this:
