Rented another billboard in WPG
First time was clever with the whole orange thing. Now it's annoying.
I love it!!
Agree with Banshee about the annoying. Don't want to think about what will happen if they try it here.
Agreed 100%. The first time I saw it, it was amusing and well done. But reusing it and changing the colour is silly. Spring for an ad campaign. A full one.
Nothing will happen ...except a new topic on here with people moaning and groaning about it .
You would think that after the recent bitter negotiations over the new CBA,
that this misuse of team money used to disrespect the other teams in the league after the league was
crying the player demands would kill the league would be deemed unacceptable to the league.
I am sure the players could think of a better way to spend that money!
I say 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct.
They were too poor to give the players the money they were asking for, yet they have the nickels and dimes to spend on crap like this? If I was a player this would definitely make me angry.
Not sure what you mean by this. It's not like teams do not market themselves and have a marketing budget. If the Riders took some money out of TV/Internet advertizing and put it into billboards, what is the issue? Are you suggesting that some alleged savings from the most recent CBA have been misappropriated or misspent on advertizing.
It Is all about hype to get people in the stands to see their team attempt to beat the green team it also provides more media coverage .and maybe the green riders are bringing their swagger i actually think it is pretty cool wonder if they will do it here for the sept 14 game and how long before we deface it if it happens
I don't see how advertising in another market helps the riders.
IMHO this is not advertising, it is just plain disrespecting your opponent.
They consider themselves the model CFL franchise, the class of the league, and they are.
They should act like it!
funny the first time but really think of something new already?
MAYBE because it fires up the fans in those cities to .. to want to go to the game and cheer loudly and have the home team win against a team who would do that.
FINALLY someone has the guts enough to try and fire up some excitement and drama into the CFL it gets fans talking it creates an excitement it gets the people who would be on the fence paying attention and hopefully getting caught up in the excitement
They do it to promote Rider merchandise, both to their fans in other cities and through the publicity to their fans in Saskatchewan. But I think they have crossed the line into arrogance, which in the end will hurt their brand.
I'm suddenly reminded of an episode of South Park, where they are arguing about replacing the South Park flag.
It's time for fans of all CFL teams (including the Riders) to unite under the cause of lynching the Riders.
Other cities should be thanking them, what did they get in Vanvouver for that stunt? 33,000 or so.
This will help sell out Winnipeg and if they do this in Calgary and Edmonton too, no doubt it will have the same effect.
It wouldn't have the same effect against an east team.
They are a not for profit organization in a salary capped league swimming in money. They've got to spend it on something!
Well then maybe they should buy the Arblows.
I agree it's lazy and boring to use the same concept with a different color for another city, but the whole undertaking is good for the league, as it creates buzz and gets people talking.
I kinda feel bad for the model though. If she gets recognized now, it'll be as "that annoying girl from the Rider billboards". And I do think they were intentionally aiming for an "annoying" shot in the photo shoot, because it makes the billboard more antagonistic/provocative.
And this isn't the first time this antagonistic billboard thing has been done. The Riders and Eskimos seem to be the main "offenders".
Couldn't find a picture/article, but I though the funniest was the one the Riders did in Calgary around 2006 that had the Rider logo, the date of the Sask at Calgary game, and the words "Football Fan Clinic".

Edmonton also did this one, albeit at home:http://www.sportsnet.ca/football/cfl/es ... billboard/
Does anyone other than me remember that "In Toronto..." billboard campaign that the Cats did up in the 90s? It was in a similar vein to this, and to the Riders v. Eskimos campaign that safetyblitz was linking.
