REGINA — The Saskatchewan Roughriders have acquired American quarterback Jake Maier in a trade with the Calgary Stampeders, it was announced on Monday. In exchange, the Roughriders have sent their eighth-round selection in the 2025 CFL Draft to Calgary. Maier is eligible to become a free agent in February.
Excellent signing by the Riders. When Harris goes down as he surely will, all is not lost. Maier is an upgrade over Shea Patterson. Also raises an issue for the Bombers as now the last decent available QB is off the board. If Bombers plan on using Streveler to back up Collaros they are on very thin ice. Bombers are going to need a bunch more heaven sent miracle winds if they want to hoist the cup in 2025 me thinks. Nice work Jeremy O’Day!
In order for any team to have a sniff at winning the Grey Cup conventional wisdom says it must have a solid tandem of QB1 and QB1A. The acquisition of Maier gets the Riders closer to that and certainly ahead of where they were last season.
oday needs to immediately rescind the oft injured ridiculous harris contract while cutting him from the team thus making Jake Mair the riders starting qb. Jeremiah Masoli also a nice addition to make a 1-2- 2-1 quarterback punch. It would behoove the riders organization to move on from last year’s 2024 quarterback’s and start over with a full press effort to scout, recruit, sign, new qb talent for their future.
I’m a Rider fan. I’m not changing my opinion. I’ve listening to rider fans who think it’s a good thing and other who disagree but I haven’t seen an about face. You comment Sounds more like sour grapes or just trying to take a dig at rider fans.
I think Jake was the right decision over Bo a few years ago. He’s had good stats over his 45 or so starts. The problem he’s encountered is that the stamps have imploded and have reluctant to change how they operate in a league with less player/team loyalty, short contracts, transient rosters. Player testimony and Dave Dickenson taking on too many roles, firing top notch coordinators that were promptly snatched up by other teams being a few examples. The Stamps ran a very good club for the past 20 years and are finally experiencing their own struggles.
There’s actually quite a few threads here already where you can read rider fans with varying opinions for/against Maier in the lead up the past couple of weeks to this trade. I haven’t seen any change of opinion.
I am not sold on Jake Maier but I was expecting the Roughriders to either trade for him or sign him as a free agent. He will be an adequate back up to Trevor Harris but I do not visualize him to be Trevor’s successor. He had some good games with Calgary but the Stampeders offense struggled quite often the past two seasons. All the blame for the Stampeders losses and poor performances were not all because of Maier’s play but his play was inept at times. I just hope he plays better for the Roughriders. Jeremiah Masoli might have been a better option but he is getting up there in age too. Time will tell if Maier stays around. Maier might choose to wait till free agency to see if there are any offers from other clubs.
Who would have thought that even after a long Strike the Post Office would come out as “MORE EFFICIENT” than the CFL in getting out the 2025 Schedule……
I do not know if this is good or bad for the Riders. However I trust the Head Coach to know far more than any fan who thinks it is bad would ever know in personnel on the Feild of of play matters
This is what I have mentioned 2 weeks back about Jake:
"A good opportunity for Jake Maier is joining hands with SSK. And SSK will adopt well on him.
Reasons:
Marc Mueller was his QB coach back in 2023.
Riders need not to worry about QB lineup for a while including short term injury situation and long term.
JM can learn and adopt in SSK to be the stable Franchise QB - no need to roam around CFL.
Both SSK and JM has to work out the costing portion.
Other places for JM is not quite feasible as he is 27, and all young starters in other teams may produce spark inside the team. WPG may be an option too, depends on the new OC and how WPG view the future. I may personally not worry about next in line in WPG as of now.
Will JM willing to go behind Bo in Hamilton, if they consider as next…?
"
You cannot have continuous success in CFL without a long term vision.
I still think the same. THE best option for riders is Maier. The sad thing is that Shea Patterson may not be in the planning for riders in 2025. He can come behind any QB at any team in CFL.
Never been a fan of Patterson, now keeping an eye on Jack Coan is the way to go.
Even Harris feels Coan can be a Franchise QB given time refining the CFL game.
Go Riders
Not from this Rider fan and I can only expect it’s so that the Bombers can’t get him. We will release him in camp when Coan proves that he can take the reins.
