Report: Elks to hire Mark Kilam as head coach

EDMONTON — The Edmonton Elks have reportedly found their new head man.

TSN’s Farhan Lalji reported on Saturday that former Calgary Stampeders special teams coordinator and assistant head coach Mark Kilam has agreed to become the Elks’ new head coach.

Hilarious.

I like the hire. It’s nice that we are beginning to see some fresh faces in the HC ranks the past couple of years rather than re-cycling the same people all the time. We’ll see how it goes but I like the move.

Now we’ll see how things go in BC & Hamilton. The TiCats are down to 3 guys which doesn’t appear to include McManus but Goveia & Geroy are apparently in the mix. BC is rumoured to be leaning towards Pierce last I heard. That would be a good hire as well.

Honest question because I know nothing about him: why?

Hervey is moving quickly to put his finger prints on the Elks . Change was needed and Elk fans have hope . Good for them . A strong Edmonton team helps the entire league :canada: :+1:

Seems like a left field move…

Not sure I understand this. Kilam is a vet coach and well liked by every players he’s coached.

I love this hire

You must also be happy to see a third head coach from a special teams background join Bobby Dyce in Ottawa and Mike O’Shea in Winnipeg!

Does anyone know what happened with Campbell? A week or two ago he was considered the favourite for the job if not a shoo in. Anyone have any inside info? I think they were wise not to hire Campbell.

Maybe Hervey didn’t want Campbell around as an easy/quick option to replace him when things go wrong  .

I don’t have any inside info but it’s possible that he wanted a break from football.

What’s hilarious? It’s a great choice! He should have been. HC seasons ago

He did interview for the position last Tuesday along with Maksymic in Vancouver according to Lalji. Kilam was interviewed Wednesday. It may be, as Clements said about hiring a completely new guy like Dinwiddie, that he blew the doors off in the interview.

But, yeah, when Hervey was hired I had read that Campbell was going to be the next coach & it was pretty much a done deal. This seemed to have come together very quickly after the Kilam interview. I expect Campbell will want to be working somewhere as he had indicated he wanted to stay in BC.

Money coming in is important but if his mind wasn’t mentally prepared during the interview a lot of people would pick up on that and choose someone who had the hunger for the job.

Kilam no repeat head coach retread hire. The Kilam hire in Edmonton with the Elks a CFL changing of the guard as Kilam has put in his time ascending up the ladder with his astute hard work. Congratulations Mr. Kilam.

Yep - a fresh face vs. a face from the recycle bin. What could go wrong? They already tried that PITA Chris Jones, loaded with experience and all kinds of peculiar coaching techniques.

Now, a guy with zero head coaching experience but brought up in a system that used to be the league’s #1 group - ie. Hufnagel, Bo-Levis, Dave Dick, Buono, etc.

Old adage - TIME. WILL. TELL.

The fact he was picked over vets like Buck Pierce & Paul LaPolice says something. Mark must have said all the right things to Ed Hervey & The Elks Hiring Committee. BINGO!

That, too!

Funny - Bobby is on shaky ground, could be fired at any time during the '25 campaign; meanwhile, O’Shea has ascended to God-like status in Winnipeg. He’ll depart on his own terms - no one else’s.

Mr. Kilam has a clean slate in Edmonton. But anything less than 8-10 and Hervey will develop “dolly dagger eyes”

Mark will make Tre the starter, if Tre sticks around.

Campbell might be happy with his payout from Amar Doman in BC - for now. . . . . however, he might be perched up ready for the first coaching casualty in 2025 - 20% chance it might be Dickenson/Cal, 35% chance Bobby Dee in Ottawa, Hamilton a bed of volatility. And don’t rule out Toronto - I suspect some NFL teams looking at Ryan Dinwiddie as a real comer.
