SPOKE TO #ESKS GM BROCK SUNDERLAND TODAY – HE WONT COMMENT ON RUMOURS ABOUT TEAMS HAVING PERMISSION TO TALK WITH MIKE REILLY – BUT DID SAY THEY ESKS ARE TALKING WITH HIM AND HIS AGENT STILL. ALSO SAID REILLY CAMP HAS BEEN TOLD THE ESKS WILL NOT BE OUTBID ON MONEY FOR 13. sure hope mikey likes us

I think the Esks see the Lions as the biggest threat to take away Reilly. Thus grant them permission and get them to show their hand and see what their offer is. The permission to talk to Reilly does not give them permission to sign him.

So this way you find out what the bar is while he is still protected. I predict Reilly will be signed in . Edmonton before FA day.

...what if BC says:

...just to sink Sunderland

Well I read this in 2 ways.
It tells Reilly what his $ figure will be and also to the Esks
or very likely that Reilly wants to go to BC and the Esks will make a trade.
I think he wants to go to BC.

And will set a new salary bar in the SMS era. ($725,000?)

Why would BC trade for him if he wanted to go there when they can just wait 4 days and get him for free?

Not a bad move. It lets Reilly get a feel for a real offer and then the Esks time to counter around that before he can ink it.

If Reilly gets to free agency he could get an even better offer.
By trading for him now the Lions are assuredly in the driver seat.

Esks and Lions did the same thing with Reilly when they acquired him in the first go around.

Not really. Reilly would still become a free agent on Tuesday if the Lions can’t sign him before that.

It would be essentially done. Generally when a pending FA is traded there have been conversations and they are on the same page. You can also simply add conditions

I’m just glad the new salary high bar will FINALLY be moving up in a significant way. Previous to this Casey Printers’ salary from way back in 2007 was as high as what Reilly was making last year, and that’s just plain ridiculous as league wide revenues have skyrocketed.

really?

can you show the figures cause I have not been aware of this.

then again, maybe expenses have also skyrocketed

more relevant would be net profit figures. Have they skyrocketed?

I am with you, it’s long overdo.
As there is no question the salary cap is going up and so it should.
Meaning Reilly and BLM if he stays will likely be in the $750k range.
In fact, there should be a franchiseplayer rule excluding the cap so that the remaining players can also get their just deserved increases.

The community teams come out with financials every year and they have gone up considerably. Not to mention in 2007 the TV contract was 20 million, and today its $42 million so right there there’s a massive increase. This doesn’t even include the new sponsorship agreements (that have almost doubled in the last 5 years let alone 10. Yes costs have gone up to, but revenue growth have far and away outpaced them.

Net profit means absolutely zero given those are easily manipulated by accountants. Revenues is what the key markers are. When the big player unions in other leagues go to negotiate a new contract with ownership, they never even mention net profits. You only ever hear about revenue and revenue growth or revenue sharing because revenue is the only item that is almost impossible to manipulate.

Just curious but was Reilly not given permission to speak with ALL teams, not just the Lions?

Agreed. If trade takes pace then Reilly is a well paid Lion imo.

And Esks will be reeling and fans peed off.

And Jennings will become an Eskimo.

That would be the worst case scenario. Would be the Barrett-Flutie exchange between the Lions and the Stamps 28 years ago all over again. Set the Lions franchise back a decade in terms of interest in the team in the local market. Poor Edmonton fans have just recently began to move past the Ricky Ray debacle, (with Reilly playing a BIG part in that) to have him leave and get replaced with damaged goods Jennings would send the franchise into a tailspin.
Remember Steven Jyles? Remember how excited the fanbase was over him taking over the helm after Ray left? Not!

If the new ceiling for the top QB’s is in the $700,000 range, that tells me the GM’s are hearing the salary cap is going to take a bigger jump than we expected.

I suspected that when Randy reined in the Football ops salaries he was setting the stage for more money going to the players.

I would like to see 70k 2 minimum no NFL out, but lower 1 year contracts for players wanting to use the league as a springboard, wagering for a bigger NFL contract later down the road.

We’ve also seen teams do desperately needed facility repairs and new stadiums…something that was not even on the table a decade ago…that has eaten a pile of those revenues…and it was needed. We’ve seen some of the safety measures greatly increase (certain training and conditioning, more on-field medical expertise…all costs a lot of money). That 42 million made a few teams go from losing money to maybe sustainable
