Maybe they have plans to use him in tight-end sets, to help the ground game and in short patterns? He’s 6’4" and 215 lbs. according to the roster, so he might be better-suited to chip-blocking and running those shallow curls and ins.
Maybe, but he’s been targeted 8 times in 5 games. Seems like he is not doing enough. Look at Quan Bray in contrast.
Less him doing enough than the Als using him enough … he has caught 6 of 8 thrown to him.
Thats a fair question JTS. He’s far from a finish product, hes still figuring things out and is still contributing Majors. His size and hands will be a huge advantage when all is said and done. VA has to develop a relationship with Jake as well, being that hes probably the third or fourth option he’s not getting a lot of looks.
Personally, I think hes a really good downfield blocker. He never takes a playoff. I hope we keep developing him in real time, along with Bray, Zac Parker and Malcom Carter. Lewis looks like he’s starting to figure things out, he’s looking like a 3rd yr. pro.
I’d like to hear back, but what would like to see him do differently or better ?.
He just seems invisible on most plays and isn’t targeted. Could mean he’s not getting open. Agreed, he might be good at blocking with his size. But, a national might also be able to do that.
Unless Johnny is mistaken, he plays slotback. You need production from the slotbacks. If he was playing the Z position (strong side wide receiver), the way he is used would be more acceptable.
Correction: he is listed as a wide receiver on the depth charts. But still…
Im very sure they will find another way to go. Johnson will be on the game day roster & will be playing a big role in the. Offense
He managed to go through training camp without ONE drop.
And that’s what makes me think they want him in kind of like a tight end. He’s a good blocker. As for catching 6 of 8 passes, it goes both ways. It could mean that he isn’t getting open. Or that he’s getting open but Adams isn’t finding him. Either way, he definitely looks like a work in progress. And you have to love that frame. He should be able to win lots of contested catches against smaller corners.
Johnstone is an Olineman. So if he is out. Then he should be replaced by another olineman.
No need to mess with the rest of the O.
A two Power Back Tandom.
& a TE to block.
Well they have National FB Spencer Moore.
Johnstone is listed as a receiver.
But really they are TEs.
A TE can line up in the slot.
Moore is never in the backfield.
It baffles me that CFL dont list any players as TEs.
Why is that?
In most cases, elements of the Canadian game usually make it better to play receivers as slots or wideouts. The wide field up here favors faster receiving targets, and the unlimited backfield motion is less restrictive than if you’ve got a TE lining up in a three-point stance. You might see someone lining up as a tight end occasionally – using in a “jumbo” set for a QB sneak – but it’s not a position that is normally needed every snap.
I say most cases. Our situation isn’t most cases. We are building an offense around the ground game and short/shallow passing game, keyed off the running backs AND the QB. So to me having a guy who Weineke who can help out as a blocker as well as catch passes, and who appears to have good hands, makes sense.
Yeah sure. We store Canadian tackles in broom closets just in case.
Should Tyler Johnstone missed the next game, I am not sure if the team has enough confidence in using Spencer Wilson at RT and having Zach Wilkinson as the sole backup in case of injury.
One option would to play both Chris Ackie and Bo Lokombo together. But folks here are not appreciative of the team using 4 linebackers at the expense of using 1 less pass rusher on passing downs. Probably worse if that formation was used for the whole game.
My guess is if Johnstone is hurt, the team will just use a Canadian receiver and insert Chris Schleuger at RT.
I hope no one bought a Marcus Taylor jersey.
Wow, weird. Either the coaches did not like what they saw in Taylor or he requested a release to pursue another opportunity.
Well, I wasn’t terribly impressed with Taylor either. He didn’t show much. Next man up.
Here`s a story on Ryan from last season - a PR TD, a fumble, and we might remember his being tackled by his dreadlocks. Should we insist he shave his head?
Tough to cut a guy after one game, though.
A valid point.
Nice pickup.
