Here’s a post I did on the origins of the Redblacks and old Ottawa Rough Riders name. This one was a learning experience. Lots of mystery surrounding the origins of the Rough Riders name. Redblacks was easy. Ha. I’ve come to quite like the Redblacks name although I really dislike the ALL CAPS although I get why they do it.

These are the earliest Ottawa football artifacts that I’ve seen go by over the years :

Now these are interesting because if they’re from 1896, that predates the Rough Riders name by two years which only adds to the mystery. Is it possible the pins themselves are from 1896 but they were only made up in 1898? That would fit with the timeline and the articles in the Ottawa and Hamilton papers which reference the pins.
