Ranking teams by percentage of capacity attendance

I've been researching attendance and capacity
Ranking teams by percentage of capacity attendance
And I found this little chart on Reddit and decided to rank the teams
Not by attendance but by capacity of the stadium filled
Out of all those teams guess who sits number one

Number one Hamilton 88.32%
Number two Ottawa 85.48%
Number Three Winnipeg 83.58%
Number four Saskatchewan 78.50 %
Number five Montreal 70.06%
Number six Calgary 63.99%
Number Seven BC Lions 61.36%
Number Eight Toronto 46.69%
Number nine Edmonton 41.45%

Imagine if Ottawa won a home game...

This isn't really fair because the teams with the larger stadiums will have a lower percentage even if they have more fans to the game. A better way would be to calculate the population of the city divided by the attendance, it will be a low percent for every city, but the highest would be the best.

I think you'll see them bounce back this year
They have 2 Good QB in mazzoli and Arbuckle
And it looks like Montreal is going to be taking a downturn

I'm curious what year that would have been? likely 2021. I went on Reddit those stats were posted 6 months ago so couldn't be from last year. I also did a search Winnipeg's average attendance in 2022 was 28,652.....still don't know how that rates overall. The good news though the attendance in 2022 is up 13% over 2021....still too low but trending in the correct direction.

What is the average attendance for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers?

28,652 fans per

The Blue Bombers led the CFL in attendance for the first time in league history this year, averaging 28,652 fans per game. It was their best average attendance since 2013 when they opened IG Field and their third-best average attendance since the mid-1980s.Nov 3, 2022

What these stats tell me is that both winning and having gullible fans works equally well. :stuck_out_tongue:

I think because the mosquitos were so big in Winnipeg they counted some of them as people in attendance.

Such a shame about Edmonton! That stadium was full, or mostly full, from 1979 to the late 80s. Crowds were good until the mid-2000s if I'm not mistaken. Can't imagine what Commonwealth is like with only 23,000 fans.

Question is: When was the last time the Edmonton Esks won a home game?

Now if we could start a discussion about actual bums in seats , that would be a whole different talk.
The Cats list attendance this year between 21,000-25,000, and except for Labour Day (maybe) the numbers published were not the actual crowd size.
I know Hamilton has the "social" area and big concourses but a couple of the games probably only had 18,000 or so actually in the stadium. I am not saying Hamilton has a fan support issue, I'm just stating what I witnessed.
It was the same for every team except Toronto ( ironically). I think The Argos were actually announcing people who were there, not just tickets sold. The Elks, for example ,were always announcing 20 thousand plus for every game and a couple of games only had 8-10,000 at the park.

...its a barn. That and they made it difficult to get to and from the stadium by removing parking in the neighbourhoods around the stadium.....and if you take the LRT you get to go through the crime ridden station that the province told the city to clean up or they would do it themselves.

...and the name change didn't help either.....or the loosing streaks....or the fact every time we build a team that is about to contend we fire everyone and start over.....or we win and then somebody on a power trip withholds paychecks, which voids everyone's contracts and they leave....

I don't know who did the math but the BC one is wrong, 20,000 out of 54,000 wasn't 61% when I went to school.

But it was on the internet. They don't let you post just anything there.

BC was counting capacity at around 30,000 this year ( lower bowl only for 7 out of 9 games), so stadium capacities listed on Wiki ( or wherever) are not always accurate.

Smoke and mirrors, BC attendance still sucks.

Sure....I guess.... I was just addressing why it said 61% full.
They had a great opening day crowd (35,000) and 30,000 for the playoffs. Without Rourke it will be tough.

The capacity of the building is still 54,000, the reason they closed the top bowl is because they knew they wouldn't sell those seats anyways.

I was just addressing why the stat sheet said 61%. Everyone is aware of why they close the upper bowl.
It is also not 1983. A crowd of 22-30,000 should considered solid by every team in this league right now.
In a perfect world every team in the CFL would have new modern 25-30,000 seat stadiums.
