REGINA — The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced their post-training camp cuts on Saturday.
Among those released was quarterback Mason Fine, who spent the last three seasons with the Riders. In 2023, the 27-year-old threw for 1,043 yards, three touchdowns and five interceptions.
People of Riderville, you must remember the saskatchewan roughriders football franchise of the CFL is a vast wasteland of many a very good quarterback released, cut, traded or other reasons from that team. That football team never patiently develops or grooms their very own talent find at the qb position, they always overpay for others rejects.
So we cut our second string Jake big arm not so bright. Our second string possibly a bit undersized Mason but smart and played in a disfuncional offence his entire career. Cut our third string Antonio who is on his how many CFL teams has he been on. And…. we keep the fourth stringer that if you listen to his interviews maybe not so bright and in his third team already he will have the run first offensive style that really wins games in the CFL. Hope Harris stays healthy cause we will be done.
And after getting several starts last season you would expect him to start settling in and playing better. But from what I saw in preseason that didn’t happen.
He looked the same as last season - ready to tuck the ball and run all the time because he couldn’t find receivers.
It seams they gave him 3 seasons to bulk up and get much more accurate passing arm.
There is something to said about some receivers able to haul in anything near but the QB on any team cannot rely on that for every throw.
Patterson will run first can’t read D after 3 years in league. I would have went Fine Paterson till Paterson learns or wants to learn. Three offensive coordinators haven’t seen anything in Paterson so…… we are one QB show this year. Have to take what they give you and read that or we can be like Jake and go two and out all night throwing the big 50/50 ball all the time.
Doesn’t matter if Fine could read every defense (he can’t), even if he could, he doesn’t have the arm strength to execute the correct play or even the height to see the coverage. He just doesn’t have the tools.
I think you’d be surprised. But even if he was 6’7, Fine still has to heave the ball where other guys just flick their wrist. On the Canadian field, with the longer throws to the outside, arm strength matters. He just doesn’t have it.
