Continuing the discussion from Congratulations Argos:
Yeah, I don't see him as the starter for game #1 of 2023, but he might be by game #18. He's looked solid but not spectacular for most of his (albeit limited) appearances.
Ditto Dave.
Timing is everything. Bet the farm on Chad Kelly for the upcoming season and the Argos could suffer early and often before he hits his stride. Mind you if the final outcome is another Grey Cup run then going all in with Kelly right off the bat MIGHT be worth it. I guess it depends on how patient Toronto fans would be should their beloved Argos stumble out of the gate for the first 7 or 8 games (I'm trying my best not to be sarcastic here).
I agree with others. I like Kelly but not ready to see him as #1 yet.
If MBT moves on I think they'll have to lock on some of the upcoming FAs if they don't re-sign....Bo-Levi or Harris being top of mind for up to 2 years and set up the heir apparent
I can for sure see him playing more in 2023 though.
Seems to be an old lost thing in football to have two QB's play in a lot of games but with key injuries the last couple years coaches and GM's would do well to have the backup plan ready to step in at a moments notice.
He has the pedigree all right. Does he have the maturity? Not impressed with his whining about the drug test. His checkered past brings up visions of Johnny Football to me. I'll remain openminded but I won't be giving him a whole lot of slack.
McLeod Bethel-Thompson will probably retire since his wife is supposedly going to make excellent money as the head writer for a Marvel tv series & also because they have a young family. So, I expect Chad Kelly will be the starter for the Argos. Kelly will be 29 years old when next season arrives. Not a youngster who is in his early 20's. Since Kelly cannot command a high-end salary, the Argos could use the cost saving elsewhere on the roster. Bo Levi Mitchell for example would require much more guaranteed money for 2023.
Kelly is the Argos last chance. Big american name and a arm to go with it. Always like beth, but he needs to retire and enjoy his amazing football career and his family. And keep your your grubbing fingers off of Bo. Go cats!
Bring back MBT. Kelly scored one drive in a Grey Cup game....does not make a career. He needs to get through the entire grind of a season before he proves he is a bona fide starting QB anywhere.
I agree, except we are talking about Toronto. They need a name, a face of the franchise. We know winning isn’t enough for the Argos.

I guess
I guess the countdown is on. What is going to happen first, a new owner for the Al's or the Argonaut QB situation being finalized. Starting to wonder if MBT's thumb/hand isn't completely healed yet and he might not be ready for the start of the season. He says he going to play this year and only for the Argos but just maybe it won't be at the start of the season. I know from having a few injuries myself that sometimes you don't feel completely back to normal for up to a year. So we can only hope for the best here. The remaining field of backups available to backup Chad Kelly are rather under whelming IMO.
So McLeod finally made it official, he's leaving. I'm ok with that. I don't think the Argos win the 2022 Grey Cup if MBT didn't get injured and it allowed Kelly to come in and do what he did. That's my opinion anyway. But Toronto does need another veteran QB. Injuries do happen and even to tough kids like Chad Kelly. I wonder if Mike Reilly would come out of retirement for a year? Tongue in Cheek. Lol
Dinwiddie now says Chad is the Man going into TC. Another report mentions Dakota Prukop being signed as a backup. He is also a good 3rd down guy. Dakota came into the CFL with the Argos. Jim Barker might have been the GM then. I remember him being a good special team guy as well with the Argos as a 3rd string QB.
Dakota Prukop is supposedly going to sign with the USFL.
Jim Popp was the GM who brought in Prukop to the Argos. Reason I know this is: Popp was the GM in Montreal in 2016. All of a sudden during a pre-season press conference, he started praising Prukop and pointed out how he changed to a bigger school like Vernon Adams did. Prukop was still in college then but on the Alouette neg list. After Popp was fired, new GM Karis Reed essentially cleared the Alouette neg list. Once Popp was named the Argo GM in 2017, he must have neg listed and then signed Prukop to play in Toronto.
Who is the guy in charge of player personnel in the USFL now? That would be Jim Popp.
Ryan Dinwiddie said the team is going to bring in a veteran(s) but not necessarily a CFL veteran(s). He is likely talking about bringing in neg list QB's with no CFL experience to compete against Chad Kelly in training camp.
Give Chad the ball and let’s see what he can do. If he’s the starter, the defence will have game plan . Big difference between a starter and a backup. I think he can do it, I’m more worried about his personality. I’ve said sometimes his mouth gets ahead of his brain.
I watched some video of Nate Stanley when he was at Iowa State. Looked pretty good, he can throw deep accurately. 6' 3 3/4" 235. Ran a 4.8 forty at the NFL combine so he can move around if needed. Was released by the Vikings on a injury settlement. Nerve damage in one leg. But those things can heal over time. Has great character. Argos had him on their neg list for a reason, like they probably think he can still play. I think he would fit the bill that Dinwiddie said they could sign some players with NFL experience. This rookie standard contract the CFL has makes it difficult to sign good QB's
I believe he finished second in all time passing yards at Iowa
Chad needs to get a booster for Foot in Mouth disease.
Agreed
