OK, so clearly the season needs to start earlier because I’m already showing clear symptoms of withdrawal. But in the “Elbows Up” era, and without a Commissioner to take advantage of this opportunity - to promote the “canadian-ness” of the league, why don’t all teams feature the provincial flag on their helmets?
Currently, only Alberta- and Quebec-based teams port their provincial flag on their helmets. Why don’t BC and Saskatchewan - obviously named after the province to attract a fan base from a region rather than a city - have their respective provincial flags on their helmets?
And the Bombers are basically a Manitoba team - why not include the flag to say, “We represent”?
And in Ontario, there are 3 teams; why don’t Hamilton or Toronto have the Ontario flag on their helmets? They don’t really draw outside the province.
I can understand Ottawa - since we’re on the border with Quebec, we market to 2 provinces - hence the reason the team’s called “Le Rouge-et-Noir” in French (even though when you actually talk to francophone fans, they call them “Les Redblacks”). So just put both on - proudly declare your outreach to both markets.
And if the objectively preferential expansion candidate of Halifax happens, just go with the NS flag. 80% of the fans will be from NS, and the remaining 20% from NB and PEI wouldn’t care and just want to be a part of the only pro sports team in the Maritimes.
I just want the training camp to start.
Flags aren’t a big deal in BC. I see the Canadian flag more out here in comparison to the provincial flag. Most people wouldn’t notice the change unless there was a press release. However, I wouldn’t be against it if the CFL did it.
Would need all 4 flags if an Atlantic team.
I believe the NFl has flags on the back of there helmets that signify where the players are from. It helps sell the game internally
This in general is a good idea because i like seeing the Alberta flag but it could get messy with non canadian players adding their country flag. Id rather the back of the helmet not look like a hipsters old vw bumper full of national park stickers. Or some chaotic buckeyes helmet.
If its done tastefully im all for it
The flags are on the helmets because taxpayers in the province pay for it. Ontario would have to pay 3 teams to have the provincial flag on it.
Teams don’t decide to stick a provincial flag on their helmets.
It’s like the patches on the uniforms like TD, etc it’s sponsorship money
I think I could name them all going back to my elementary school days, but I don’t like this idea. The reason is that far too many flags, including the Manitoba flag, reflect a colonial era and incorporate the British flag. We are not a possession of another country thanks and royalty sucks. What happens if we become the 51st state? Do we proudly display the US flag on our provincial flags? No different than displaying the British flag. No thanks.
Theres only 13 flags, I would expect any Canadian to be able to identify them all that being said The provincial flags contain symbolism from when they were created, which reflect our history. It shouldn’t be controversial to have a union Jack, fleur-de-lis, or even a Maple leaf on our flags. I would expect our flags to change at some point in time because flags for the most part are hardly ever set in stone, but the flag doesn’t have to change if the people don’t want it to just like when Hawaii became a US state it still carries the union jack on its flag
Some places in this country, don’t have as much national pride as they do with their province, region, or City.
I guess I missed Sheldon’s podcast"Fun with flags"
That may be but there is a big difference between a Union Jack, which represents colonialism, and a maple leaf, which is representative of Canada. To me a Union Jack is no different than putting a stars and stripes on our provincial flags.
I guess we can either see ourselves as once part of the empire, or were once conquered by the empire, but I suppose having the constitutional monarchy means we’re still part of or under the empire.
loyalist upper canada (americans who populated Ontario) colonized the prairies so id rather see the Alberta flag than a Canadian one.
Getting back on topic i think a two flag limit is fair, canada and then the player can choose the teams province or the players country of origin.
Not in favour of a constitutional monarchy as well or any monarchy for that matter. You know my position, but you’re right, we are drifting off topic slightly even though we are still talking about flags so I will leave it be.
