Province article on the Lions

Pretty good article in the Vancouver Province about the Lions and how Doman is changing the mood in the city about the team.

Disconnect between the article and 2nd part of the heading. “But it struggles to attract 20,000 fans.” Huh? That’s not what the article is about. The actual article is about rebirth and optimism, not struggles to sell tickets.

That is a weird little addition. Old habits die hard, I guess. So far, they haven’t attracted fewer than 20,000 for any game this year. I guess we’ll see how they do with Calgary and Hamilton games coming up. After that, we’re into September and the stretch run.

A week ago, I attended a Portland Timbers soccer (football) match. Portland is not a huge city and soccer isn’t popular in the US. However, it was a huge deal there. The stadium seats 25,000 and I’d say it was 90% full on an extremely hot night (32 degrees at the 7:30 start).
What made it exciting was the rabid fan base. I’ve never seen anything like it. The closest was an Iowa college football game and this was easily five times more intense. To top it off, they’re like this while the team is one of the worst in the league.
The BC owner is doing it right. He’s building a culture and he’s playing the long game.

Interestingly, the subheading has since been changed to read; “The Lions attracted 23,905 fans Saturday and 33,133 for their season opener.”

Typical of the ultra negative Vancouver sports media. Maybe they think it’s a way to assist Doman in getting more live bums in seats?
