Prejudice vs. reality

A definition of prejudice is: “unreasonable feelings, opinions, or attitudes.”
Please note the following excerpts from 3downation, which they adopted from an interview (with, possibly Vanstone):
“I think a dirty player, malicious intent is a little too far, especially for me — I’m not that kind of person, I’m not that kind of player. I don’t see value — you don’t gain anything from playing dirty. I think that was too far, a little egregious. Not at all did I mean to try to hurt him or intend to hit him in the head. I genuinely believed I hit him in his chest,” Brown said.

“If that’s how he feels, it’s very clear he doesn’t know me. When a president of a team is calling a player dirty, naturally you influence the emotions of some people. He can’t control what happens. I think it’s really dangerous when you say things like that, especially in the media. We’ll see what Saturday holds for us.”
Corey Mace said: “Miles is not a dirty player, he plays a physical game, though. I know his intention is never to hurt anybody. I hope Zach’s good. Being a big boy trying to control your body, that ain’t easy."

“I haven’t spoken to Zach, I saw he was taken out for precautionary reasons. I’m hoping that precautionary means there’s nothing wrong with him and that he’s OK. I’ve heard he’s taking first-team reps this week, I’m glad he’s back on the field,” Brown said.

“In this situation, the safest thing to do was to turn my head to avoid a head-to-head collision. You can see on film that I did pull up, I did not follow through with the hit. I know how strong I am, I didn’t feel like I gave him much power. I felt like I reduced as much power as I could.”

“In situations like this, I don’t know if there is any possibility that a 300-pound man is going to stop within two feet of a person running full speed. It’s quite difficult when you’re running full speed to stop on a dime. That’s not something that’s physically possible for a lot of men my size. It’s not something that’s possible for me,” Brown said.

“As I was closing in on him, I was directly in line with him and I was so close that I knew I was going to make contact with him but I also knew I wasn’t going to get the sack. When I realized that, I turned my head away from him to try to avoid head-to-head contact and inadvertently made contact with his face mask, which warranted a penalty.”

“You could see me throw my hands away from him, I jumped over and rolled, I thought that was the safest way to finish that play, it obviously was not. I turned my head away from him so I didn’t hit him in the head, it’s a football play, sometimes it happens,” Brown said.

“The idea behind it is to keep quarterbacks safe, that’s something definitely I can get behind. While hard you have to find a way,” Mace said. “Those are the rules right now and we gotta abide by them.”

I was criticized by some who wear blue-tinted glasses for suggesting that Brown tried to mitigate damage by turning away. That act alone suggested that he was not head-hunting. I like Zach, and while the play did warrant a penalty, calling Brown a dirty player is over the top, and I feel sorry for Zach, because after so many concussions, it doesn’t take much of a hit to exacerbate his lingering vulnerability to head trauma. When he played for the Riders, I was in favor of letting him go to save his future health. He continued to have a number of good years, but at what cost? I hope he is well after football.

Well I guess that’s it then, both people in Sasketchewan say it’s a clean hit, just bad luck.

Two great posts “sackatz”. That’s exactly the way I saw it. The hysteria out of Winnipeg is just that. Mean-spirted hysteria.

TNX Stipley. When Zach was in Riderville, I just groaned when he determined to play again. I know it is hard to leave the game behind, but football is a relatively small portion of a person’s life. I played in high school. Sustained an injury that ended any hope of advancing in the game…and today, several decades later, I am still paying for that football experience. That is why I really feel for guys who go down with serious injuries. Head trauma has to be the worst, because after football, will they remember their kids’ names? Too many guy linger for too long after concussions, like Matt Dunigan, Dickenson, and Zach.

Talk about a homer post and coloured glasses. This takes the cake.

What BS from Brown after taking out his second QB of the year. As stated, since two people from Saskatchewan said the hit was fine, that must be the case.

The hit was late and there was no effort made to avoid the hit. The QB didn’t duck or slide or in any way change the location of his head. He was a sitting duck and his head never moved until speared by the new Micah Awe. He also launched himself and left his feet and hit him at that stage, which is always worse. It was the worst hit I have seen in the league this year in my opinion.

Typically there was no penalty for the hit other than an undisclosed $75 fine which will mean one less trip to the buffet line for Brown this week.

These things happen and rarely do I see Justice from the CFL and I have long passed dwelling on this hit. I’m not going to take the bait of engaging in an obvious self serving homer thread on a continuous basis and there has been plenty said by myself and others on this.
Time to move on. I just wanted to expose this thread for what it is and register my opposition and I see that so far one other has done so as well. You can of course try to continue to convince others that this was a clean hit.

I have the same reaction every morning when I look in the mirror…

Just a small portion of the cake you baked. You not only wear blue-tinted glasses, but the tint is way to deep because you didn’t read that everyone, including myself, concluded that it was a play that warranted a penalty. Nobody said that is was “fine.” Also, if you do some research into the other QB hit, you would find that he was pushed into the QB…absolutely unavoidable, but still a penalty under the rules. And BTW, “my post” was not my own commentary, it was from the other source, as mentioned. And, I guess he turned his head away to look at some girl in the stands.

Must be hardy cherry trees in Winnipeg. You guys sure do a lot of picking.

If he did make an attempt to not hit full force I did not see it all .
I give him on a scale of 100 with 100 being innocent …
I give 0.5
Not even close . He may actually believe what he says but that don’t make it real.

Try to respond the post rather than the individual or their fans. A general negative description of Bomber fans does nothing to support your position and in fact I would say detracts from it.

And, by the way, he didn’t launch. I looked at it several times, even took off my green-tinted glasses, and all I saw was a guy running full tilt. I don’t know if you ever had a bead on a guy and tried to change course in a game. As he said, it isn’t easy, especially for big linemen who can’t dance like a running back can.

I just watched the replay again for about the 15th time. Miles finished the play, he followed through on that play, he didn’t try to hold back at all, fact is he led with his shoulder to finish the play, to his credit miles did turn his head last second in an attempted to avoid a direct helmet to helmet hit, though still made helmet to facemask hit, which is the same call.

Now as far as prejudice goes, that could be just as easily said for Riders fans. No?

And I agree with @Jon … I’ll show myself out. Not worth my time.

More highly-articulate picking.

You mean like you saying someone has made a “homer post” and is wearing “rose-coloured glasses”, while talking about “exposing” their thread for what it is?

hey Jon, heretofore, I always considered your posts to be reasonably objective. Did someone pee in your coffee this AM? Stipley’s little dig is the same as found throughout these various forums. It didn’t sound malicious to me, lighten up, dude. I can’t agree with your opinion, but you have a right to “voice” your opinion, as do we have the right to disagree.

There was no attempt to hold up he just kept coming … Leading with the shoulder too is not antemp to. Ow down on the hit. We have both seen guys trying to avoid and mitigate the force of a hit about to happen and that is not the way it looks.
All he had to do is say he misjudged the play and shoulda done better.
I see guilty as charged with no remorse and a lame ass a excuse.
