Predictions: Starters

This is just for fun, it is a complete crapshoot, but lets try it out, see who is fairly accurate come opening day. This barring no injuries to our starters in TC or preseason.

Left to Right

Offense

OT- Oldenburg, Neufeld*
OG- Labatte*, Best*
C-Picard*
WR- Bagg*, Harper
SB- Getzlaf*, Dressler, Hill
RB- Rankin
FB- Hughes*

Defense

DE- Willis, Veikune
DT- Shologan*, Romero
OLB- Stewart, Bowen
MLB- Grahm
CB- Jackson, Brackenridge
HB- Patrick, Frazier
S- Butler*

P/K- Milo*
Returner- Jackson/West

*NI

Goodspeed is your starting left tackle. End of story.

I know that everyone hates his guts because he missed one block (albeit embarrassingly badly) in Calgary and got Durant creamed, but if anyone REALLY watched the line play last year Goodspeed was the best tackle in the West for sure probably the league for the first 11 or 12 games. Goodspeed was HARDLY the only olineman who played poorly that game. All 5 of them were beyond atrocious. It was ONE GAME. Most of the year the oline was very strong.

McCallum was driven out of town over one bad kick. Now look at his success in the 6 years since. Don't make the same mistake twice. One bad play does not ruin an all-star tackle.

MLB is LLoyd's spot to lose.

Patrick better not play half. He can't cover. Neither can Butler. Patrick is the pure ballhawking safety, Butler is the NI big hitter, can blitz and crash down on runs. Neither of these players are effective anywhere but safety. Let's face it, the secondary is a mess.

Left to Right, not gonna designate Non imports 8)

QB- Durant
LT- Dan Goodspeed
LG- Labatte
C- Picard
RG- Best
RT- Neufeld
WR- Bagg, Harper
SB- Getzlaf, Dressler, Hill
RB- Rankin
FB- Bell (Hughs) Split duty

Defense-
LE-Willis
Re-Rowe
DT- Shologan, Romero
(Linebackers cannot comment to many new guys but Lloyd starts MLB)
CB-Jackson, Brackenridge
HB, Graham, Frazier
S-Patrick, Butler (Butler on running situations)
P/K- Milo
Returner- West/Jackson

At receiver, Dallas Baker is the sleeper talent ready to emerge. Whether or not they start him Week 1 I dunno.

And with the #1 pick in the draft there is a possiblity we draft Chambers

Also dont count out our secondary we have possibly the best safety tandem in the league, have a young core of DBS like Eddie Russ, woldu, and Jackson, I'd match that up with any WR/SB combination in the league

NOTES

  • Both Patrick and Butler have to be on the field. They are quality players.
  • Kenny Rowe could leave the DL and be a big hitting LB.
  • Abraham Kromah looks like a fast player that can make big hits.
  • DeShawn Wynn is a 232lbs RB…Boom!
  • LT is a big question mark. Clint Oldenburg is our best recruit, but maybe Goodspeed switches to LT.
  • Boo Robinson looks like he could be a rotational starter.
  • Mike McCullough and Paul Woldu may start for ratio reasons. Graham, Bing, and Bowen could bump McCullough down the list if the ratio is not a concern.

Previous poster asked will we select Chambers 1st overall.

I can see it happening. We were sitting pretty with 8th, 15th, 23rd picks...........but we're left with 1st and 15th in the top 20. I won't get into trading away good picks for Odell.

They might try to replace Fantuz with Chambers. They are about the same size. Everyone around the country has said as far as receivers go Chambers is the best one out there.

But Heenan appears to be more of a sure thing? But our O-line depth by signing LaBatte and Picard is now pretty good. I am surprised an O-line prospect wasn't going to W'peg (Hutchins or Grausnick Groh?) But the bombers i guess want to pick their own Cdn players via draft and they need Canadian players...........thats why we got zapped for 2 good picks.

NFL draft may factor. Both these kids have interest down south. If they don't get drafted they may sign as free agents after the draft? CFL teams might draft them in later rounds if this happens? But teams that are deep with Canadian talent (Als and BC and the Riders) will still draft these guys high!

But.......because we have good depth on O-line I could see us going more positional need instead of who is the best player available? Then we have to sit and watch until 15th instead of getting another top 10 pick (argh)

Draft the best guy. NEVER reach to fill a hole.

If you really can't make the pick fit your roster, trade the pick.

If you don't want Heenan, then trade him to Edmonton or Winnipeg or whoever. Get something back and THEN pick Chambers.

If you want to do something really really colossally dumb, take Chambers 1st overall and hand Heenan to Tillman for free.

I have to take GRAVE issue with this. The Riders have EASILY the WOOORRRSST secondary in the league. They arethe only team that does not have a single guy who has shown he can play man coverage. As for best safety tandem, they have two very different very one-dimensional safeties, neither of whom is effective at any other position other than safety. The only time that we should see them both on the field at once is on 2nd and long when Patrick can move over from starting safety to nickel and Butler can come in at safety. This also may mean that Patrick might have to burn a DI slot.

As for the rest of the names, after watching them all get burned repeatedly in man coverage situations all of last year, (and it's basically the same group, at least the starters) I do not feel comfortable matching them up with anyone in the league. Not even close.

Tristan Jackson is by far the best of the bunch. i love him as a player, but even he is not best suited for man or press coverage.

The only saving grace is that hopefully there will be some semblance of pass rush this year, which will allow the defense to play more zone, avoiding man - and we all know how much Richie Hall loooves his zone coverage. But QBs in this league like Calvillo, Ray, Lulay, Burris, pick one, perform surgery on zones.

10 years ago zones worked well, but these days, the way the offenses execute, zone is only what you play when you're not good enough to play man.

One very interesting angle to this season will be Hall and Chamblin working together. Hall built his entire reputation on his bend-but-don't-break-zones. Chamblin is a disciple of the new era that relies HEAVILY on in-your-face press coverage. It's like they are diametrically opposed.

zones work well, as you said, with a pass rush. They also work well if you mix the zone and don't always roll the same guy to the same spot...something the Riders failed with last season.

The little bit I saw of Eddie Russ last year told me he could stick with anyone, and also does well in zone.

Frazier is probably better in man than zone. He tends to want to stick to the the outside edge of the hash in zone, and always allows the 12-15 yard pass underneath.

I think Jackson could be good at man if the club tried it a bit. It is tough to walk in and play man coverage when you have not been a DB in years...

zone is supposed to be more forgiving...vulnerable to slants and short outs, however, with no pass rush you are going to have guys open 30 yards down field after 4sec. Short outs we can live with...it is a long pass for 5 yards in the CFL. Having a guy like Butler put fear into a guy coming over the middle on a slant is where they have to succeed. Patrick had a brilliant year as a Safety in 2010...perhaps they should look at swapping him and Butler. Patrick can at least jump a ball...that being said, Butler was a rookie last season, and faired pretty well. Perhaps this season he will go for fewer hay-makers and try to jump a pass or 2.

IMO the biggest issue the D had in 2011 was that if they wanted any pressure on the QB they needed to bring LBs on the rush, which leaves the middle wide open. 4 DBs cant be expected to cover all the flanks plus the middle on a typical passing down...that require 4 DBs, a S and a LB.

Very good point. Chamblin has stated adamantly he is not there to coach any of the teams...that is the assistants jobs...he is there to give advice, help evaluate and make final decisions. That being said, I am sure some of his experience will rub off on the look of the D. A D that can disguise a lineup of man coverage as zone 15% of the time is a scary thing. I would suspect teams will be using a pile of motion against the Riders in the first few games to help determine what coverage is being supplied.

Expect Rod Pederson to have a Chamblin article in the next day or two. In that also expect that Chamblin has stated he still seeks one more NI WR...

Don't be shocked if Heenan is not the number 1 pick, though I still believe he should be. I wish the Riders would have traded one on the OL in place of the 8th overall pick...Ismael Bamba or Jawann Westerman would be solid solid pickups, even if they do not have the frame the Riders seek. I think Bamba could turn a few heads in the future.

As far as going undrafted they must be drafted to play as a NI. Basically, undrafted NIs can be bid on with future drafts and thus go into the supplemental draft.

Really, would it be a shocker if the Riders traded their 1st overall pick with the Esks....say 1sr overall pick plus a lineman and something else minor for 2nd overall and 6th. The Riders are win win with either Chambers or Heenan, and would get one of them with the second pick. I believe the Esks would love to scoop up Heenan.

Well depopINC; one would believe/think Heenan will go at the #1 pick by Sask. If the Roughriders go this route will Tillman pick Chambers?; hard to say who Tillman will pick at the #2 spot. For myself, I hope it’s Ismael Bamba as I feel he’ll be an excellent Special Teams return guy or?..ect. I can only speak for myself though; if Tillman trades a first round pick away, I believe it will be the #6 spot.

what would he be willing to trade for the #1 spot. It would take a lot for #6 plus something. The Esks could really use Heenan. Trading a couple first round picks might be worth it...dont get me wrong...cant see it happening...just saying

I can't see it happening either; chances are we won't know what the teams (as far as trading picks) are going to do until the day of the draft. With that said; in 2011 Sask. drafted OL - Matt O'Donnell who chose to go the Basketball route was a stinger, so I feel the Rider brass will select Heenan. Good talk in this thread too by the way.

According to riderfans, we signed a new DT Mike Williams, looks like a promising prospect, along with Boo Robinson there will be a battle for starting DT, and sounds like Dario might not be in our plans, but I think that would be a mistake, keep for this year unless one of these young guns proves they can play. Still in need of some NI DT for camp, Ryan Lucas is available, and might be a good backup for Sholo, as I just don't know if the two young NI's we have on roster could be effective starting.

I feel this team is coming together nicely. They have gotten younger in alot of ways but have still managed to fill some pretty big holes. The defensive and offensive lines should be pretty good this season. The linebackers, although we lost Freeman, will still be ok. The secondary, I feel, will be better than last year as they were starting to play alot better towards the end of the season. The recieving core will be better then last season if bagg is healthyChamblin is a charasmatic leader who I feel can rally his players.
