Big names getting cut is as much a part of the CFL training camp news cycle as CFL Draft picks getting signed or starting quarterbacks discussing how much they’d love to play a full preseason game.
Carey to the Elks? They are stacked in that position. Chances are if Ford struggles, it’ll have more to do with bad pass protection than failed running backs. In that case, they’ll need a back who can block, and he is not Carey.
Not sure if Rysen John even has a future in the CFL. Apart from his height, he doesn’t have much going for him. He’s slow, runs routes poorly and is not sure handed. Rysen might want to be a reverse Global player in that instead of an Aussi coming here to kick, John heads to Aus and tries his hand at footy.
Is it the end of the CFL line for Hakunavanhu? He once was good for a big catch or two per game, but that was long ago. Might be time for him to move to the next phase of his career.
Fletcher in Sask seems a longshot as long as AJ is healthy and productive and as long as the rules mandate only one ball can be in play. That Fletcher will be wearing a CFL uniform sooner rather than later is for sure. I’ll even boldly predict he’ll rush for 1000 yards this season, and he might do it playing for more than one team. He’s just too good not to be on the field bashing would-be tacklers and racking up impressive yardage.
DQ Thomas to Montreal is a hard one to understand. Two of our three linebacking spots are set with Beverette (Will) and Sankey (Mike), and with our ratio distribution, we are dressing only Canadians in backup LB roles.
This article made me mad enough to actually create an account so I could reply. This site is replete with outdated information and lazy reporting. Luther Hakunavanhu was released by Calgary, LAST YEAR!! The CFL already suffers from lack of coverage and pertinent, current information for its fans. Please do better, the CFL and its fans deserve more competent coverage.
Uh, you do know that he played 2024 in Hamilton and was released by the latter at the end of this year’s training camp, right? The article is suggesting a return to Calgary.
I too was Surprised hamilton let Knight go. He was flying around. Wilborn didn’t impress me that last game, i thought he might go. hope he goes out there and proves me wrong
Strictly on-field stuff with Fletcher. We’d already re-signed him and paid him a signing bonus, so this wasn’t something the team had in mind in the offseason. Put simply, Stevie Scott III, Travis Theis, and STE had better camps than Fletcher, and the team sees Scott as a better short-yardage guy and blocker than Fletcher was.
I hope Fletcher isn’t out of work for long. He’s still a great dual-threat RB / short-range receiver.
I don’t think he was unmotivated. From all accounts, his camp was fine. He didn’t have a great preseason game, but no one looked good in that loss to Ottawa and he got like 2-3 touches. This is just the cruel business of football.
“They wanted to give the young guys an opportunity,” Fletcher said. “That’s the game that we play. It’s a young man’s game. I’m 28. I’m not up there in age, but at the same time you understand the nature of the game, the business and the league that we’re in. We’re professional athletes. We can’t take any day for granted — or any year. “This is the bad part of the business. No one wants to go through this.”
“We like the physicality of Theis and Scott,” general manager Danny Maciocia said. “Their ability to block played a huge factor in our decision. And their ability to be punishing runners is definitely an attraction.”
