Playoff Football

Continuing the discussion from 3 stats that defined Saskatchewan's Western Semi-Final win over BC:

These are interesting match ups for the finals. Two teams with momentum late in the season, against each division’s most consistent teams throughout the season (Winnipeg’s early season struggles offset by the rest of the season). At least one of the momentum teams should break through, but I would not be surprised if both showed out. Both Winnipeg and Montreal appeared vulnerable the last few weeks. Personally, it would almost be mythological if my Bombs managed to overcome their early season implosion to win the Grey Cup, but any of the three remaining will be a tough out. I am just going to enjoy the journey as it has been incredible all season.

Generally agreed although I would argue that the team with the most momentum is Winnipeg as they have won 9 of their last 10 games. The team with the second most momentum is Toronto in my opinion, the team that handed Winnipeg their last two losses. Winnipeg dominated the first game they lost to Toronto and had a decided edge in the second game and it could be said they beat themselves both games.

Saskatchewan also has some momentum although they haven’t faced the level of opposition that Winnipeg and Toronto have lately. I don’t consider BC to have been very good in the second half of the season. Saskatchewan will also face Winnipeg’s league best defence and by far league best secondary that allowed Toronto’s presently league best offense only 14 points. If Zach has it going the game shouldn’t be close but admittedly that is a very large if.

Montreal has zero momentum and their fans are worried, although they still have a very good team and it won’t be a shock if they win. Especially if they can derail Kelly early and rattle his fragile mindset as they did last year.

As we know from as recently last year, anyone can win any one playoff game. I think all teams are as close as the last 4 teams have been in many years. I also think that if Toronto snd Winnipeg play their best they win and there is nothing that Montreal and Saskatchewan could do about it. But nothing is a given of course.

I agree with the points you made. Last year Montreal peaked at the right time and were easily the best team in the league. They started out that way this summer, and then the injury bug hit their skilled players, and they have not fully recovered. Fajardo hasn’t been the same since his injury. I cannot put my finger on that? Any of the four remaining teams could win their game, but the Bomber’s toughness and experience gives them the edge. Total coin toss between the Als and Args. Maybe the Argos because they are coming into the game with the better playmakers but, you are right, Kelly has a fragile aspect about his game. He tends to overcome that though, when he tucks the ball and runs, rather than trying to force a play. Going to be a fun Saturday!
