I thought that this may be a good off-season thread.
When I was really young, my dad took me to my very first Tiger-Cats game. This would have been in the mid to late 70s. I can’t remember much of the game, but I DO know that I had the time of my life. I fell in love with a LB (I am fairly sure he was a LB, but I can’t find one with his name. @mightypope2 would probably know for certain) named “Henderson”. It seemed that on every defensive play, we heard over the PA system “Henderson made the tackle”. I DID find a reference to Zac Henderson (a DB), but I’m not sure it’s the right guy.
Anyhow, after that season, my dad told me that he had been cut or traded. I was distraught and in tears over this. He was my favourite player (based on that ONE game I went to - even though there were SO MANY othre players during htat era) and his replacement was some unknown guy with an almost-unpronouncable (to me) name of Ben Zambiasi.
Needless to say, it didn’t take very long for him to become my SECOND-favourite Tiger-Cats player of all time. My favourite has been, and likely will ALWAYS be, Earl Winfield (Praise Be His Name).
Let’s see who else fits into this category. It doesn’t matter what era, either. A more recent example could be along the likes of Chris Williams being “replaced” by Brandon Banks.
Drew Edwards then proceeds to write a story wondering (wink) if Austin was cutting out the heart and leadership of the team including quotes from Dave Stala who wasn’t even on the team anymore. But, yeah, Austin sure was a meanie.
Lindsey Lamar who first time he ever touched the ball took it to the house in the 2013 opener vs Toronto being eventually replaced later in the season as main return man by a guy named Brandon Banks .
Another one that comes to mind would be Andy Hopkins who was replaced by Jimmy Edwards . The irony of this is the fact that they were essentially traded for each other albeit with 5 other players coming along with Edwards for Hopkins in the deal .
The Cats received 6 players in the deal . QB- Jimmy Jones , RB- Jimmy Edwards , DB-Lewis Cook , DT- Gord Stewart , OL- Bart Evans and OL- Daryl White in exchange for Hopkins and the rights to QB- Jerry Keeling who wound up never playing for the Als . It was one of the craziest most lopsided trades in league history .
Was it the same Jimmy Edwards ? I’ve seen this before but… “Our” Edwards bio shows him in the WFL in 1975 going straight to HAM in 1976. Can’t find any mention of MTL at all. Trade was in Jan 1976. WFL folded in late Oct. 1975. Plausible MTL picked him up in the mean time, again no mention of this.
But “our” Edwards bio makes no mention of him being involved in the trade.
One news article describes the Jimmy Edwards in the trade as a rookie. Our Edwards wasn’t. And makes no mention of him being a pro in the WFL.
Could be the same guy but I don’t think so. Sounds like a case for the mighty one.
There is no need for the mighty Pope on this one . The Jimmy Edwards involved in that trade was the very same Jimmy Edwards who played here from ‘76-78’ . Edwards was a throw in and an after thought in that trade . He was signed by the Alouettes for the upcoming ‘76’ season but was subsequently included in that trade to Hamilton for Hopkins just before the start of the season that year .
Yes sir, that’s all true. I remember Edwards playing for the Als in the first pre-season game against the 'Cats in Hamilton in 1976 in a game Montreal won 25-1. The trade was made at the end of the pre-season.
Lamar was good (he had a return TD against the Bombers in preseason as well) but actually got knocked out of the lineup due to a concussion on a helmet to helmet hit. About the sixth game of the year against the Riders. Never played again to my knowledge.
