piss poor quality of games

I like CIS.

I have actually enjoyed most of the games I watched this year. I find offences haven't been as hurt as they were last year when half the leagues teams starting QB's missed a good portion of the season. Only thing bringing the speed of play down is the penalties, and not the new ones as some of the teams this year have rarely been called. I think the CFL future should be in good hands, as Smith, Cato, Harris, Nicols, Franklin have all showed some positive abilities. Lets see how Mavre does in Winnipeg, even though it is going to be more about their O-LIne and offensive schemes than just his ability.

I wouldn't knock the CIS, in the last 10 years, the play has increased dramatically.

I think the quality of the games is a reflection of both the loss of starting QBs and the new rules, especially the illegal contact on a receiver rule.

While we’re on that subject, the change to the punting rules (in terms of when players can chase downfield) has not had anywhere near the impact that I feared it might.

The illegal contact thing has had the effect of sustaining drives, but not in the way it was intended. :? I do wish players were quicker to adapt to it because I don’t hate the rule itself as such.

As a Stamp fan, I can say the Stamps are not consistent.
Very slow starts.
It will be a race for first, between Cgy & EE. The Labor day back to back games will be a true test for both.

i dunno im rather enjoying watching the cats 8)

3 things:

  • CFL games are far more exciting this year than last. Not all games are going to be Picassos, especially with all the injured starting QBs. I watch NFL too. Trust me, plenty of duds on that side of the border as well.

  • Penalties for the most part appear to be sorting themselves out (thankfully).

  • The silver lining (with all the starters going down)? At least the up-and-coming QBs (the next crop) are getting plenty of meaningful reps, which will improve the overall QB crop in the league.

A BIG OSKI-WEE-WEE TO THAT !!! :rockin: :rockin: :rockin:

It’s not our fault that we make every other team we play look so BAD  So far from where I sit this season has been GREAT !!!

Can’t wait to change my signature at the end of the season  8)

3rd time is always a charm isn’t it! :rockin: :rockin:

As I say, the games are friggin awesome for this fan but then I love Canadian football and the CFL and know how to enjoy the nuances of each and every game like many others. Not you so much.

Have to admit I don’t watch Blue Jays, I wish I could drop Sportsnet from my cable and save a bit of money, so I’ll just have to continue to have my feelings that Blue Jay games, MLB for that matter, is boring albeit the Tigers are my team in that league.

I have said it again and again.. In the NFL a practice day is 12 hours.. In the CFL it is 4 and a half...I think everyone will agree that the penalties are the biggest issue the league has.. The low scoring is a product of all of the penalties... Yes penalties extend drive too, but scoring cheap touchdowns adds no excitement to the game..
Here is my solution..

  1. Tear up the CBA
  2. increase the salary cap 500K per team with the condition that teams are allowed to practice 6 hours a day. Rookie imports must practice 7 hours a day with 1 hour class time explaining ,and drilling the rules into their heads.
3)fine players for taking stupid penalties. If a defender is clearly beatin and pulls down a reciever then this would be a non-fineable offence. Double the fine for blatent roughing the passer and unnecessary roughness penalties.
4)redistibute the fine money to players who do not take penalties.
5)Watch the quality of play improve dramaticly and the extra 4 and a half million will produce 10 fold the revenue in increased attendance and TV ratings..
  3. If the penalties do not decrease then tear up the CBA again and add another 500K per team and make it a 8 hour work day. Also double all of the fines.Obviously do not tell the union this part or the players will purposely take penalties.

Penalties are absolutely no issue to me at all and the quality of play has been fantastic IMHO.

Totally agree, Earl. The entertainment value of the games this season has been far superior to last year, even with all of these starting QBs out.

I agree, I think the penilties have improved greatly this year and the new rule changes have added another dimension to the CFL game.

As far as the back up QB's go, I think it's great. Injuries are a part of football and any good team should have good quality depth at QB and most do, so it gives the other guys an opportunity to play and show us their abilities. Where it's tough is in situations like Regina and Winnipeg. In Regina they lost both starters in Durant and Glenn but fortunately have Smith who seems to be pretty good and will get better game by game. In Winnipeg it's been Drew Willy all the way, unfortunately when he went down the back ups in Brohm and Marve have not had much playing time. Montreal have done well with Cato and Bridge when they lost Crompton and LeFevour?

I think the quality of the game is there this year and it's a more balanced league from East to West and certainly lots to cheers about.

And penalties are decreasing as the season progresses as well. Yes, I know that there were a lot in the Toronto/Saskatchewan game last week - the highest rated game of the season so far btw - but generally we are seeing fewer penalties over the last 3 weeks than we did before that and we all knew coming into the season that there would be a lot more penalties in the early going as players adjusted to the new season and rules.

I happened to post some of the following in the game thread from last night after reading a legitimate complaint along these lines. How soon have you forgotten about last season's game quality mess. We certainly are in better shape and going in the right direction.

Well, it's two weeks in a row that we have such a game with very slow action though at least most of the mistakes were not penalties like last week's gem. With the usually glib and understated Cuthbert declaring the first half "mercifully over," that game last week was so bad at the half that I thought why not just not play the second half and issue each team a loss.

Even with the lower score last night and the lowest scoring game of the season so far, I'd still take last night's game in Montreal 15-12 over last week's mess in Toronto 30-26. Of course I am in the minority, for that inaugural game for the Argos at BMO Field received the highest ratings of the season.

Consider that by my count last season in 2014, not counting a very rare shutout win that was by Edmonton over the Riders, there were 12 games with total scoring of 30 points or less by both teams!

So far this season, there have only been two such games. The other one was at an even 30 points in Week 4 17-13 Montreal over Hamilton.

I can understand that many folks don't like some of the rules changes and a few of them do need to be tweaked anew for next season, but one silver lining I would point out to them is this positive trend on scoring after hopefully 8 weeks or almost half of the season as compared to last season.

I still have seen overall better play this season at this point than last season up to this time despite the changes in the rules, so let's look on the bright side with such a trend in scoring as compared to the 2014 season.

Bungle, one clarification is in order. I agree with some of these recommendations too.

NFL players do not practice 12 hours straight a day in training, and on many of those it is not even 4 hours mind you.

On the two-a-days and under the new guidelines of the new CBA from back in 2011 after the lock-out, the morning and afternoon sessions are broken up with several hours of rest too. At most from memory, on only a few of those days in camp over the two weeks does the practice time run at most perhaps 7 hours total time on the fields. Also film time and time for team meetings in auditoriums or conference rooms do not count in these figures. Much of the time with film is extra time put in by the best players too.

I think some people are confusing a strong defence with poor play. I like what I have seen. And being a cat fan I hope marve rips TO a new one.

I agree Earl, the games by and large have been excellent this year.
All close and coming down to the very end.
Including yesterdays defensive struggle.

It was not the ingrain game at BMO... That should be next season... GET OUT THE JACKHAMMERS TFC FANS...haha .. Then the artificial turf too :rockin: :rockin: :rockin: :rockin: :rockin: SCREW TFC!!!!! :rockin: :rockin: :rockin: :rockin:
