Pick your three

I know it's going to be a while before we see any Sask fans posting, as they are still probably out partying or recovering from their hangovers, but the expansion draft is comming up soon. Every team is going to lose 3 players, who do you think your team is going to lose?

Luke Tasker
Frédéric Plesius
Simon Charbonneau-Campeau

with a possibility of Sam Giguere

I think these are our likely candidates.

Dominic Picard
Dwight Anderson
Paul Woldu

Will it be 3 per team or can 1 team lose 4 while another loses 2?

Each team will lose one import and two non-imports.

Tim Brown
Jason Araki or Junior Seydou Junior Haidara
No clue... perhaps they take a flyer on a young kid that has little to no experience...

I put more thought into this in the Lions forum.

Matt Nichols
Mike Miller
Brian Ramsay

Neat idea to do it this way…

  1. Onrea Jones - I could see Austin leaving Jones unprotected, although I'd be locking him up as he is a very versatile player. The type of player Ottawa would probably be going for. If Austin does protect him, I'm guessing Ottawa would go for Simoni Lawrence.

  2. Peter Dyakowski - I know, most people expect that all teams will end up protecting their o-lines, but Hamilton has depth there, and they have a lot of non-imports elsewhere who I feel need to be protected more, at positions with less NI depth.

  3. Carl-Olivier Primé - By the second non-import round, all the starters and primary backups will have been protected, so Ottawa will be using this round to pick up prospects.

Round one: Import Draft

Existing teams may protect one quarterback and ten additional import players, while only being able to select, at maximum, two quarterbacks in the draft. If a quarterback is selected from a team, that team may protect an additional two non-import players in the first round of the Non-Import Draft. If a kicker or punter is selected from a team, that team may protect one additional non-import player in the first round of the Non-Import Draft. Ottawa will select one import player from each existing team in this round.

Players who I think Saskatchewan will protect:

QB - Durant

Brackenridge
Chick
Dressler
Xavier Fulton
Maze
Sheets
Rey Williams
Weldon Brown
Jock Sanders
Taj Smith

I think Ottawa takes Tearrius George this round

Round two: Non-Import Draft

Existing teams may protect six total non-import players, including the team's one protected quarterback and one protected kicker/punter. If a quarterback was selected in the Import Draft, eight total non-import players may be protected. If a kicker or punter was selected in the Import Draft, seven total non-import players may be protected. If a non-import kicker or punter is to be selected, it must be done in this round and, if so, that team will be able to protect an additional two non-import players in the second round of the Non-Import Draft. Ottawa will select one non-import player from each existing team in this round.

Players I think Saskatchewan protects:

Chris Best
Craig Butler
Getzlaf
Heenan
LaBatte
Shologan

Kicker: Milo

I think Ottawa selects Ricky Foley

Round three: Non-Import Draft

Existing teams may protect six more non-import players in addition to those that were protected in the second round. If a kicker or punter was selected in the Non-Import Draft, eight more non-import players may be protected. Ottawa will select one non-import player from each existing team in this round.

Players I think Saskatchewan protects:

Bagg
Zack Evans
Graig Newman
Levi Steinhauer
Corey Watman
Sam Hurl

Ottawa selects: Paul Woldu

I could also see Ottawa picking someone like Sam Hurl or Newman with their first Non import pick instead of Foley. There's going to be some quality players going to Ottawa.

Here again, free agency complicates the ability to predict these.

Not to mention they are building a team with salary cap implications. Do they draft best available from each team or try to fill in specific positions. Not an easy feat… makes it even harder for us to speculate which way they may go.

Where did you get this definition for the second round protection list? I thought teams could only protect more than six non-imports in this round if a quarterback (+2) or kicker (+1) was selected in round one.

Here in a nutshell are the rules. Good view of Riders Dust.

Butler
Bagg
George

EDIT (not sure why my original edits didn’t take):

The reason I asked this is that you had a DL selected in round one, but you then have seven players protected in the second round.

Go to TSN.ca, click on DFL and scroll down to expansion draft. They list the rules there.

You don’t think we will protect Butler? Is this because he is a FA? And Ottawa has basically said they aren’t planning on choosing any potential FA’s.

I think I may have screwed up, I read it as 6 imports PLUS a kicker. I think you’re right.

If we don’t lose Butler in the expansion we will to free agency. I hope I’m wrong because he is a great Canadian but I see him moving back to one of the Ontario teams to be closer to home. That and he’s going to demand close to top dollar for his position and I doubt the Riders can pay that.

All reports I have heard is that Butler wants to be back in Green and White. The closer to home thing is just speculation, I have never heard that coming from him.
