He did come through in the end for sure.
So Hughes is starting for the final game against BC. Will we attempt any FGs? lol. Have questions about Lauther. Was he having back issues all season? The fact that he was 90% inside the 40 and crap beyond that may suggest that he was. That the longer kicks were a strain and that everyone involved thought he could get by. And we did for half of the season.
Then something odd started to happen, we started going for 2 point converts instead of kicking what should be a sure single. Don’t get me wrong, I love the two point attempts but in retrospect i think Mace was just protecting Lauther from further damage. If he is still hurting then we perhaps should have protected him even more by starting Hughes the WPG game as well. We all want, i assume, our kicker to be 100% in the playoffs?
So what’s the verdict on Hughes? 90 yard kick with no tail wind is pretty impressive!
That guy has a monster leg. Ever since kickoffs changed to the 30, I have never seen a non-wind-aided kickoff even reach the endzone, without bouncing. This guy put it through the uprights! On the 42 yard FG, the ball landed past the back of the end zone. So, if he is dangerous from 60 yards out, crossing mid-field will be a chance for 3 points. BTW, I don’t know if/when the rules changed, but at one time ANY kick, including kickoffs that sailed through the uprights were 3-pointers. Can somebody weigh in on this please?
That kickoff was from the 40 but still, 70 + yard FG. Don’t recall those being counted as 3 pointers. Must be some pre modern day CFL stuff? Then again, don’t recall ever seeing a drop kick although i know Flutie made one in the NFL.
tnx SHF, It was definitely “pre-historic.” But I go way back to pre-CFL when the western teams played in the WIFU.
So who are you guys A) hoping for B) expecting in the WF? Hughes or Lauther?
Lauther and Lauther.
Hughes next year.
I am going to go with Hughes for a few reasons. First, stronger leg. Good percentage on his resume. And, players want to play. So, even if Lauther isn’t 100% he will say he is, and we don’t want any crucial misses. His back problems may be temporary, but this is a business….a nasty business….and there will always be a younger guy waiting to take a vet’s job.
If Lauther has a strong performance in the playoffs he should 100% get an opportunity to fight for his spot in camp next season.
Bring in Hughes and a young Canadian like Maximuik or a global like Gauchez Lozada and let the games begin!
I’ve been in Lauther’s corner throughout his struggles the past few years. I can’t help thinking his confidence may still be shaky due to his back injury. As such it might be better to go with Hughes.
His back troubles the last month or so doesn’t explain the first dozen games. More importantly, Mace hasn’t been letting him try too many long ones for at least half the season now. Hughes has the stronger leg and seems accurate as well.
Back issues can linger and yet I expect Lauther but prefer Hughes right now. If Lauther’s back isn’t a 100% it would be real easy for a kicker to bugger that up in cold weather and leave us hooped.
O can’t justify putting in a zero experience rookie for the western final. I’ll take my chances with the proven vet, shite year or not.
I agree 100%
I prefer 70 yard kickoffs sailing through the uprights lol. He might be a rookie but he’s a rookie that has played in front of some serious college crowds with high expectations.
