ok fine, looks like the Renegade name won't be back next year. So the rough rider era and the renegade era did not have success in the last 10 years or so. So, why not start anew. Call the team something brand new and original, something that has not already been taken by the other 8 teams in the CFL. Just imagine if they called them the Ottawa Lions, or the Ottawa Argonauts or the Ottawa Eskimos. Well calling a new Ottawa team the Roughriders or Rough riders would be the same thing, considering that Saskatechewan are called the roughriders!!!! It would be embarassing and plain stupidity having 2 rough rider teams.
Please, Please...What ever you do, do not name the reincarnated Ottawa team the "Rough Riders". If this is allowed, the CFL will become the laughing stock, as it was in the late 80's and the 90's (until the Rough Riders folded after the '96 season). The only reason that the CFL had 2 teams named Rough Riders (Roughriders) was when 2 different leagues (WIFU & IRFU) merged to form the CFL in 1956.
The new owners of the Ottawa team have to think beyond the scope of the Ottawa area and the older fans (the ones taht actually remember the Ottawa Rough Riders). I do not have any memories of their haydays, only the years that they were always fighting to get out of the basement in the East Division. The best year that I remember was when they were 9-9. It is time to look toward the future, and start something new. Build a new tradition and bring respectibility to the CFL by coming up with another Team name (the logo you can always use in another name).
The "Rough Rider" ship has sailed. Do not call it back.
Here are a couple of suggestions:
Ottawa Valley Riders or Ottawa Valley Raiders. Both of these names can incorporate the old Rough Rider logo. Some thing new and something old to appease those who remember the old Rough Riders and those who don't.

You're prob right in that any "criticism" or being laughed at response doesn't amt to squat.
But in this case, the new team will have so little margin for error that they can't afford negative PR over something as basic as the team's moniker. The Tor Star and Ottawa Sun have already dumped on it. And the team hasn't even officially been awarded yet.
The respective groups might want to rethink the idea that a return to Rough Riders, Riders or "something" Riders is necessarily the best course of action.
I agree how we should not have two teams with the same name regardless of the "tradition". That's what is is history, and what's that saying learn from it so you will not repeat it.
Having said that, it was the Als upon the "return" from Baltimore they stuck with the name after the failure of the Concordes. Mind you, we do not have another Als lurking.

Actually, how about opting with Ottawa Football Club? Let the fans create their own name as the years go by. If the Rough Rider moniker is so popular (which I believe it is), it will win out Likewise, with Renegades.
