Anyone know why they changed from Elks to Eskimos in the first place?
So this arbiter of social justice & marketing savy says they can keep the logo?
Top 10 new name from a source:
Edmonton Rugby Foot-ball Club was an early football club formed in Edmonton, Alberta in 1907. It played out of the Edmonton Exhibition Grounds. The team was renamed the Edmonton Esquimaux in 1908 and again as the Edmonton Eskimos in 1910 (a named later adopted by a new team in 1949). It later joined the Western Canada Rugby Football Union in 1911. The team twice played in the Grey Cup championship with their final appearance being in 1922 as the Edmonton Elks. (Not sure why they changed the name, maybe they found it objectionable?) ![]()
A ONE-POINT TOUCHDOWN On October 27, 1923, the Edmonton Eskimos ventured to Calgary to take on the Tigers for their second of three Alberta provincial union games after Calgary won the first match 18-4. In the second quarter, Edmonton was ahead 4-0. when they punted to the Calgary 20-yard line. On second down halfback Ken McCallum broke through the Edmonton line and into the secondary. Weaving through a broken field, he sped 90 yards to the goal line with two Eskies in pursuit.Upon crossing the line under the watchful eye of an official, Ken slowed to a trot, allowing one of the pursuers to tackle him. When he touched the ground, the referee blew his whistle to indicate a dead ball and gave the Tigers a single point rather than five points for a try (touchdown). It seems that in 1928 in order to register a try, the ball either had to be TOUCHED DOWN to the ground after crossing the goal line or the player in possession of the ball had to remain stationary, in which case the official would blow his whistle and indicate a dead ball and award the team their points. McCallum’s movement after crossing the line did not bring the play to an end, and the Eskie player was able to make a legal tackle.
Edmonton held on to win 4-1 and the third game was cancelled by bad weather. The Eskimos finished the season in first place with a 3-1 record, while Calgary was last at 1-3.
How about Edmonton Redskins?
You would be correct, sir!
I think I might be right too.
This is much closer, if not the exact definition of, cultural appropriation.

Wow - that has to be the ugliest outfit I have ever seen…
But of course the PC crowd will find my comment as an insult to the Inuit culture
If I were an Edmontonian, I would be offended to be stereotyped as a colonialist who marginalizes minority groups. Typical eastern attitude

Wasn’t it a British writer that called it “Deadmonton” ?

It was just a matter of time…
Inuit group wants Edmonton CFL team to change nameCanada’s national Inuit organization says the storied Edmonton Eskimos Canadian Football League franchise should change its name.
“It isn’t right for any team to be named after an ethnic group,” said Natan Obed, president of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami.
The term Eskimo is a relic of a past in which Inuit people had no control over their lives or even what they were called, said Obed.“This is part of the past. It isn’t part of the present and shouldn’t be part of the future.”
Although questions have been raised about the team’s name before, Inuit groups have always stayed out of it. Obed said it’s time that changed — especially with the franchise being featured in this weekend’s Grey Cup championship game in Winnipeg.
“With the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action fresh in our minds, all sectors of society should be contributing to the ongoing reconciliation,” said Obed.“When we mobilized and decided to fight for our rights, we decided to use the word ‘Inuit,’ because that is our name. No other group of people has the right to tell us who we are and name us.”
The word Eskimo is a vestige of the days when Inuit lives were controlled from the south, said Obed.“If anyone was to call me an Eskimo, I would be offended by that.”

Just think, if they change the name back to Elks (like they did in 1922), they wouldn't even have to make a new logo.
Never loved the Eskimo name, so wouldn't mind if they changed it.
This will disappear from the news very soon. Who cares? Very few if any. I love the name.
Don’t mess with the name :cowboy: :cowboy: :cowboy:

They won’t. They Ottawa paper is just looking to stoke the rivalry.
This is the part that irritates me (well, one of them) in these types of arguments (including Redskins and all other variations).
"If anyone was to call me an Eskimo, I would be offended by that."
Then take it up with that person. The team wasn't named with you in mind. Get over yourself.
I will say that in the case of Braves, Redskins, etc., I can understand if people from that culture don't care to see people from outside it wearing headdresses and "war paint" and such. Those things have meaning.
Not sure that applies here though. If anyone is dressed like an "eskimo" in Edmonton it's probably only because it's cold as hell right at that time.
I doubt these folks would agree.
People also said the Redskins thing would go away. It hasn't. Instead they had their trademark pulled, have had the name banned in some states, and got a truly excellent South Park episode dedicated to mocking them.
It'll die down for a while because of how much less media attention the CFL gets, but it won't ever really go away.
