A little clarity from Drew Edwards
There's been various news reports over the last couple of days linking Ticats defensive coordinator Orlondo Steinauer and the head coaching job with the B.C. Lions. A Vancouver radio station reported yesterday that Lions general manager Wally Buono had asked the Ticats for permission to interview Steinauer, only to find out that he had “no movement clause? in his contract.
The Ticats, as a rule, don't comment on contract matters regarding staff or players so I wasn't able to get anything on the record. But I talked to a number of knowledgable sources from around the CFL today and here's what I've been able to piece together:
• Buono made an initial inquiry to the Ticats organization last week regarding Steinauer but no formal request to interview him was made. From what I heard, Buono has a number of other candidates on his short list.
• Buono was, however, told about Steinauer's no movement clause.
• sometime this season, Steinauer signed a contract extension that included the 2015 and 2016 seasons. As part of that new agreement – which provides an unusual measure of job security for a coordinator – a no movement clause was included. The deal was never announced publicly.
• this is just conjecture but I'm guessing general manager and head coach Kent Austin retains the right to grant permission for Steinauer to interview with other clubs, should Austin choose to do so. But since no formal request has been made...
• the Ticats were looking to achieve some continuity in their coaching staff by giving Steinauer a longer-term deal – most coordinators get one-year contracts, sometimes two – the trade off being he would have to commit to the organization. One can only assume that Steinauer – who's as smart as they come – understood the ramifications of signing the deal.
• and to be clear, I haven't heard any complaints from Steinauer or Steinauer's camp about the situation.
• everything I've read and everyone I've talked to believes that Buono wants an offensive-minded coach with some head coaching experience. Clearly, that's not Steinauer. But Buono thinks highly of him – that's universal throughout the league – and may run out of other options quickly.
• there's always the potential this could damage the camaraderie among the Ticat coaching staff but I don't get the sense that's what's happening. At this point, Austin hasn't said no to the Lions and there's no indication that Steinauer wants to leave.
