I never expected that Vernon Adams Jr. would opt-out; some Als players that I thought would opt-out are:
WR Eugene Lewis
OL Trey Rutherford
OL Chris Schleuder
De Antonio Simmoms
WR Jake Wieneke
The opt-out period is not over, yet; other players could still opt-out although it's getting quite late.
I am not too surprised. Vernon was paid a BIG bonus by Maciocia, by opting out even if he gets no NFL interest, whenever the CFL resumes he will negotiate himself another signing bonus... At least that is the idea.
I personally think if the CFL comes back it will be with much lower expenses for a few years. Team overhead has ballooned, which in turned has raised ticket prices to excessive amounts for what is essentially a semi-pro league. (Look at the practice hours and non-existant off season training program and OTA's)
This could be a great thing or disaster. If the Owners try to pocked all of the savings and leave ticket prices as they are it will end the league.
According to CFL transactions, from August 20,2020- beginning of opt-out clause- to August 31,2020, 76 CFL players have opt-out; great majorities are rookies. The numbers per team are:
Saskatchewan: 17
Hamilton: 13
Winnipeg: 12
Calgary: 8
Ottawa: 7
BC: 6
Edmonton: 6
Toronto: 6
Montreal: 1 Rookie WR Fabian Guerra. No official confirmation for Vernon Adams JR.,yet.
I can't say that I am overly surprised; the fact that as of late last night there has been no official confirmation of his release made me wondered; did the Als promise him to review his contract or pay him more that the majority from July to December 19,2020 or 24 weeks, which is the period where CFL teams will benefit from Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy. Did he realize that there was no interest in the NFL? Worth it? After all, he could earn as much as $481,000 in 2020 if season is on.
I guess it's the best thing that can happen for the Alouettes.
