I agree, both Henoc and Bo are excellent as commentators. Listening to Muamba critique Winnipeg’s Grey Cup defence on Bennett’s podcast was very interesting indeed.
With all the departures from Toronto , what with Retirements and free agency, I question if something is wrong in the Argo camp ?
I mean last year they were almost undefeated, wouldn’t the team want to remain again this year and get a Grey Cup that lots figured they were a shoe in to get last year?
I don’t think it’s complicated. Kelly got a huge raise in the offseason, which meant they couldn’t afford to keep a bunch of players from last year under the cap.
Bo is a broke-down Hobo, a shadow of his former all-star QB self. But he’s an all-star commentator and should be given a shot upon full retirement (later this year). Could easily take away the spot currently held by irritating Davis Sanchez - or perhaps the #1 color commentating spot held down by Old Glenny Suitor. If Bo displaces Suitor - then Henoc replaces Sanchez. All is good. . . . .
I was really surprised when he was a guest panellist the first time. Not just the level of intelligence but how well spoken he is.
Panels never work without bias and people operating from a specific point of view. If they all sat there agreeing with everything everyone says it would be pretty boring, so I can forgive a little bias.
Thats why Milt Stegall works for me (and thousands of others, obviously). He’s unwilling to state the obvious and repeat the pedantic meanderings of others. Guys like Sanchez are consumed by what others think. Stegall is NOT.
Jumbo Jim Barker is OK cuz he’s usually in his own circus carnival world but he brings a mass of experience to the table.
Dunigan obviously operates with a modicum of brain damage which effects his presentation slightly but its still darn good, accent and all.
Kate Bee was somewhat grating at first but overcomes her liabilities by an obviously sincere commitment to CFL discussion.
Chez is the only one I’d dump from the table, perhaps turning him into a floating color man as Old Glenny rides into the sunset - but I’d never be so stupid as to make Chez a permanent color man. Look at how many are upset by Old Glenny whenever he appears - Chez would be twice as bad.
Only so much money in the pillow re: TSN broadcasts. They’re fortunate (in a way) their game broadcasts are formulaic and standardized. They don’t have a big game feel to them - like CBC w/ Wittman used to have - and most national NFL games present. Thats what lack of competition does - Sportsnet doesn’t have any games to broadcast - we’re lucky to get scores on the “hockey game network”.
Since he was on the 6 game all season I suspect an injury kept him off the field. He was back at practice a couple weeks toward the end of the season but never back on the depth chart.
I had a problem at first - but when I thought about it more, there was no conflict of interest and he showed little more bias tha any other person on the panel. He did seem insightful with his comments though - and was dead on with his analysis.
That really worked for me. Unlike some other Milts on the panel he has the grace to say “I don’t know” rather than act the fool getting vested in his opinions.
Muamba’s stuff on The Waggle with Donovan Bennett is consistently good. He brings his obvious football knowledge to the table and shares it in a way that is at once insightful and crunchy, on the one hand, and accessible, on the other. I loved his breakdown of Winnipeg running cover 0 on Montreal’s final TD drive in the Grey Cup.
