O'Leary: What's next for the Bombers?

As we slowly move past the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ crushing loss at the 110th Grey Cup, a harsh but simple reality is making itself felt to the organization, players and fans alike: winning is hard.

As we slowly move past the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ crushing loss at the 110th Grey Cup, a harsh but simple reality is making itself felt to the organization, players and fans alike: winning is hard.

Most teams could only wish for the problems the Bombers have - great management, great coach, players and a great fan base - and gee they have only won the Grey Cup twice in the last 4 years! Wow, are they exaggerating their problems or what? But we all know that things will get screwed up in Winnipeg because “someone” thinks that change is needed, Now look at Oliveira - he had a great year, and yet he feels he wants to go to the NFL to really prove himself. WHAT!!?? I resent the attitude Oliveira is showing - he thinks the NFL is better than the CFL. Frankly - to hell with him! Let him go, with the understanding he cannot come back.
What the Yanks have that we don’t have is the money, huge media and broadcast support, and the glitz and glamour. The content is no better and the quality of the play is no better. Oliveira, like far too many Canadians have a inferiority complex when it comes to comparing us to those south of the border. Think about this for a moment - if Canadians truly believe that the USA has anything better there, then move there. But please stop spreading the false idea that their football is better than ours - it just ain’t so!

While I agree with your statement money talks. Who can blame someone for trying to get the most out of their career. In the same position I’m sure everyone would take a substantial raise to do the same job they do now. I hope he plays in the CFL but I don’t blame him if he doesn’t.

To LoveThisGame - I agree with you about a person wanting to get the most out of their career, but the comments by Oliveira reflects that he isn’t playing at the highest caliber of the game - and that is what i really disagree with. What the CFL needs to do is to grow the game and to get more Canadians supporting it - by supporting more minor league, high school and university football programs will help provide future CFL players - PLUS grow the game into a East coast franchise. As we have seen, the East Coast is ready for a team and the huge support shown by the fans at this Grey Cup should show us all that the fans want more CFL. What is the CFL doing to grow the game? This is a question and not a criticism.

I have an idea for not only the Bombers but all CFL teams. Don’t cave to the board. They wanted Montreal to win and teams have been told to play soft so new ownership teams win and gain fans. It happened when Toronto won under new ownership. It happened when Ottawa was resurrected, and now Montreal. Both Toronto and Winnipeg played soft in both games. One play stood out for me…Bighill downfield at the goal line defending a wide receiver who scores. Who puts an MLB who is playing injured, covering a wide receiver. There is something afoot here. I’ve been a CFL fan for over 60 years, and I know what I see.

Bighill’s explanation of that play:

"If you guys in the media are maybe a little bit more savvy watching football than maybe your average person, you know that we don’t ask linebackers to cover receivers vertically down the field,” Bighill said. “Let’s just say I was trying to cover up and help out. Was that my man in man-to-man coverage? No. But it’s OK, there was a miscommunication that Montreal did a good job of exploiting, coaching-wise.”

I don’t believe in any conspiracies.

That is the single most ridiculous and strange thing ever to be thought in the history of the world :grinning:

As a history teacher this is a ridiculous statement. And no it is real.

Never, ever has Bighill covered a wide receiver. Where was the safety? Where was the DB? His job is to stop the run, sack the QB, not covering a wide receiver 30 yards down field. And as someone who has been a devout CFL follower for over 60 years I’ve seen even more. There is a stink to all of this over the years.

Wow you guys, Bighill himself spoke to this. He was covering for a breakdown that was happening and the All’s saw it and exploited the mistake
In other words, foot ball happened.
The spotters upstairs saw something
the coaches designed a play for it
The players executed the play to perfection.
Suppose you all think the earth is flat and the moon shots were faked too

Executed to perfection eh. Really? To perfection means not having an MLB covering a wide receiver. THAT is a breakdown.

the Als exploited the bombers on how the bombers set up to defend.
It twert a conspiracy
If you truly think s,o you need to go somewhere else to argue this…possibly a court room with a law suit to prevent it from happening again

He was referring to Montreal’s players playing it perfectly.
Did you even read Bighill’s explanation? He admitted there was a breakdown.
No need for conspiracy theories.

Are you being deliberately obtuse?

Nope this poster is accidentally obtuse.
Being deliberately so would mean they would fully know they were espousing a lie

(getting back on track) “What’s next for the Bombers?”

A 5th Grey Cup appearance against an opponent that we’ll either win or lose to in the final minutes by a field goal or less. You heard it here first. :grinning: :+1:

Ditto
Riders ain’t gonna contend
Nor will the Elk
Cowtown still lacking something
BC are as good as they gonna be and it was still not enough

Too many moving pieces in the Bomber org to know how things are going to shake out.
I’m hopeful but not confident they’ll be as dominant as in previous years.
If Walters and/or McManus, Goveia depart difficulties may arise. Their work product up to date will still be helpful but late winter, early spring scouting may be impacted.
O’Shea’s culture will still be a draw for free agency signings though.
A fifth Grey Cup appearance would be great but more importantly would mean another exciting season for us Bomber fans who spent a couple of decades in the wilderness.

For anyone to think that a football game can be rigged has no idea of how the game is played and what to would take to control that number of players - it would require a great control over too many individuals to remain quiet - not to mention the uproar from the other teams when they find out - and they most definitely would. So it is time to get our minds out of the gutter and appreciate the worthy team who became the CFL champions Montreal. As a Tiger Cat fan, I just hope that a lot of Winnipeg players who want a change of scenery, want to come to Hamilton! I will happily teach the how to Oskee-wee-wee!
