O'Leary: Evans opens up on his Native American roots

Dane Evans understands that he’ll get questions when he tells people about his ancestry. That’s a given.

Whatever.

Good on him!

Yes, good for him. IMO, stories like these ought to be shared. Two reasons: 1) It's timely given National Truth & Reconciliation Day (and that we all do well remembering that some have more obstacles/fewer opportunities), and 2) because, from a league/news perspective, it helps "round out" the athletes as being people.

Dane Evans is surely entitled to his opinion, but the "Truth" of the matter is you can't rewrite history whether it is good or bad !

It's not about rewriting history. It's about confronting the truth on how past Governments treated Native families and Communities

But you can correct the written history. Much of what we were taught as History was a white washed version, or was missing many of the facts.

As they say.....

"The victor tells the story"

The quote gets attributed to Winston Churchill, but its origins are unknown. It implies that history is not grounded in facts, rather it's the winners' interpretation of them that prevails. The victors can force their narrative down on the people.

It's an eternal struggle for some of us more involved in these efforts more than others too.

It's always marveled me how often those who have already sanitized or whitewashed any given time in history continue to engage in revisionism. I see this even after major current events on any given anniversary too.

The rest of us must keep the narrative truly representative and honest.

We know what happens next when, misinformed by various media, most people do not actually know what really happened that day or in that time period from those who actually were alive or there.

This is also why it's very important to speak with your elders and talk with them as much as they will tell you. It's understandably hard for anybody going through such extreme hardships of war and conflict to discuss their experiences, but when they do it pays to listen to what really happened.
