OB Punts

For the same reason as if it was a kick off

On a kickoff the receiving team gets it at their 45

I think punting out of bounds is a legitimate strategy, and it's very hard to do well, so there's no need to punish it.

If the only goal is more offence at all costs, why allow a QB to take a knee? Or throw the ball into the stands? Why allow teams to voluntarily concede a safety touch? Answer: because they are all valid strategies in certain situations.

Punts landing in bounds and those going out on the fly should be treated differently
because it takes a lot more skill to punt the ball so it lands on a spot in bounds.

Good point, Yukoner,
if you’re correct about the 10 yard penalty
for punts that go out of bounds on the fly

but there wasn’t a penalty on Westwood’s punt
that flew out of bounds on our 2 yd. line on Friday.

I second that… If your going to take OB punting out get rid of all of the antics that teams use strategicly including offences trying to draw deffences offside by taking 2 or 3 procedure calls in a row, there are so many the list goes on… Heck lets just play rugby instead, I know I wouldn’t be a CFL fan anymore.

Its because a punt return is far more exciting than watching the ball roll out of bounds!

I also dont think that kicking it out of bound is that great a skill. When I does go out inside the 5 its just luck.

well, if you lived anywhere near me, I would challenge you to a contest to prove to you that it CAN be more than just luck.

Sure it has a lot to do with luck... but who cares, 50% of this entire game is based on luck and skill... when a QB throws a longball there is skill involved, but that perfect hook up with the receiver has a little bit of luck involved. Who cares whether its luck or skill... the fact is it's part of the game, and in my opinion an important part.

The receiving team may:
take the ball at their own 45;
take the ball where it went out of bounds; or
have the kicking team kick again, from 5 yards back.

The third option is never taken anymore, since the 45 is such good field position. Back in the old days, when it was the 35-yard line, teams used to choose that one quite often. The second option is usually taken on short kickoff attempts that go out of bounds without being touched.

But kickoffs and punts are very different animals, and must continue to be treated as such.

What you guys seem to fail to understand is to get it out of bound you're already losing at least ten yards

I don't quite get why a kickoff that goes out of bounds is illegal.

It isn't a penalty now, I'm just saying it should be. Its really the same thing as the NHL...when a player intentionally shoots a puck over the boards, its a delay of game penalty. But NHL players, particularly goalies used it as a strategy to ease the pressure or get a change for years. What the NHL finally said was, no, sending the puck out of play was not a legitimate strategy.

The CFL should say the same thing...they should want to keep the ball on the field, and leave the opportunity open for a return. However, if a punter manages to land the ball on the field before it goes out of bounds...that is a real skill and the kicking team should be rewarded for it. Keeps the "coffin corner" kick, a great part of the CFL game, in the game.

Just leave the rules the way they are now , we got the best now . All the ideas mentioned are stupid with no point. Sounds like a bunch of Kanga-choo-choos trying to change a long standing traditional rule just for the sake of changing it. It's a stupid idea.

the man has spoken…it must be so

agree, but OB Punts should be 5 yards, no more, and singles in the endzones.

Too many punters named Fleming. lol. I thought you meant Pat rather than Sean.

Since No Yards does apply for kickoffs, the “punt” penalty will not apply for it as well.

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

Rules commitee debated that change and voted it down this Spring.

Good point! Thats my feeling too! Remember Grey Cup 2004? The penalty for the Lions angling the ball out of bounds was great field position for Toronto who won the Grey Cup! Shorter field = Grey Cup victory!
