Agreed but I’m sure @bobo82 could tell you that the percentage of people following the CFL in the lower mainland is very small. Overall, Hamilton is the better football town, especially given the support they give the Ti-cats vs their record.
I agree, that’s kind of my point.
The Cats attendance slightly down, but overall, since 2004, attendance has been strong.
BC is WAY bigger in population so the 24k they get on average is actually not a stunning crowd, but they are trending up.
I think this has a significant amount to do with the performance of the teams on the field. An 0-5 start last season had to hurt the Ticats, meanwhile VA and the Lions were much more competitive.
The problem is that the Cats started 0 for the last three seasons . An even bigger problem is that if you look at their history with the exception of a few outlier years starting off the season slowly and poorly is the norm for this team . It has been a problem now dating back over 40 seasons and counting to date.
2022 … started off 0-4
2023…started off 0-3
2024…started off 0-5
So you go to one game a year but are unhappy with the choice of live entertainment
I also suspect if the team starts 6-1 nobody will give a rip about what band is playing the Stipley.
Hamilton Spectator : “Stipley Crisis : We dont get to pick the bands or songs and dumb fans just encourage it by clapping. Why is the city condoning it ?”
that was saltlick.
been in the Hammer for about 10 years now.
stadium wanted far too much money to operate, they basically just broke even…but sorta got their name out.
I moved out to Vancouver Island August 2023 from the Barrie area and I spend a fair bit of time in Vancouver. The Lions do get a good amount of support from their fans and the media.
Farhan Lalji did a lot to promote the team with his in depth coverage of transactions, training camp and the regular season. The games in Victoria are a hit too.
Like Hamilton, the Lions have a solid hard core group of fans that support the team no matter what. Because they play in such a cavernous stadium it can seem like there isn’t a lot of support but in reality it is there.
Yes, a new owner with deep pockets has helped but the interest in the team is definitely on the upswing. Lots of team banners around BC Place and in the city.
Going to the July game when our beloved Cats are here along with my hardcore BC Lions fan friend. Cat fight in the stands! Can’t wait.
Can you sing and dance?
To be clear I wasn’t suggesting that there isn’t solid support. I was suggesting that there are a higher percentage of people in Vancouver and the surrounding areas that don’t follow the league. There are various reasons for this. 1. High immigrant population (but thankfully there is growing interest amongst the 2nd generation), 2. the influence of the NFL and specifically the Seahawks. 3. the focus of the NHL and specifically the Canucks. If you can afford cable out here and you have to make a choice between Sportsnet and TSN, most people are choosing Sportsnet. The ratings for Lions games are near the bottom of the league. They battle with Ottawa in this way. 4. The people who don’t follow sports at all. 5. The people who would rather be outside in the summer. ie) hiking, fishing, going to the beach, barbeque etc.
The dwarves are either too tall or the Stone Henge prop is too small . I still remember the first time I saw this and I was on the floor dying with laughter when they dropped it down to the stage . .
The lore behind the Stonehenge prop is something akin to miscommunication - they wanted a 20-foot-tall one, and got a 20-INCH-tall one… lol
haha spinal tap would actually be a sweet half time show
btw here is the full info in the new stipley stage battle of the bands
I think we’ve come pretty far with half-time entertainment.
Anybody remember the entertainment they provided around 2010?
They set up a small table on the field at Ivor Wynne, and some guy was trying to set a record for how much steak he could eat.
Really riveting stuff.
As an 80’ s kid…two words come to mind.
Dog Races…
I mostly remember the Burlington Teen Tour Band.
