Af4l, I find it rather humourous that you find that sneeking alcohol over the border is a worse crime then stealing hundreds of millions of tax dollars. That is just to dam funny. Really I want to be your friend, I will smuggle booze and you get me 100 million dollars. Also if you noticed no one in the Liberal government was booted for this yet Harper immediately kicked this guy out. so really what is your problem. The only one who truely should fear Harper is Paul Martin and Jean give me your money Chreiten. Thats hope they re investigate and catch the real crooks not the fall guys. Thats see Liberal judges snetencing these fall guys hmmm no wonder no one will pay for this crime under a Liberal government.
Ah, what the heck whats $100M here or $2B there squandered and or stolen by the Fiberals. What I am afraid of is how many more skeletons are in the closet that we do not know about but hopefully our man Harper will uncover.
The gun registry may be the next bomb that is uncovered. Billions of dollars spent to rigster firearms. Seems a little high to me. I wonder what Liberal friends got envolpes of meny from Jean and friends. Dam I wis I was their friend. I would be on a beach sipping my smuggled booze with my illegal hand gun that was brought over to Canada by an amercian gun smuggler. I find it funny it now occurs to Paul Martin that the guns are being brought in from the States. Duh Paul wake up where have you been it is not the registered guns being used on the streets. Wow and this guy was running this country Ro you can have this recycled reject from Shrine Circus.
The last time I checked, people kill and or commit crime not the guns. Let's get serious about crime and hopefully Stephen will, mandatory sentences with no parole. No more bleeding hearts mentality.
It is amazing finally we will get some teeth in sentencing. It is funny the prisoners have voted and well Harper is losing in the prevote with prisioners ha ha ha wonder why Paul is the prisioners choice. In Texas ha ha h okay I am not a G Bush fan but this state has had 10 year sentence if you use a weapon while committing an offense. You can also get a minimum sentence of 10 years if you do not check your ak47's or weapons at the door where alcohol is served. Is this a deterent well it might not be that effective but I can tell you it takes these guys off the streets. These kids driving around shooting at people will think twice about doing a drive by shooting. Can you imagine if found guilty of crime you serve time for the crime and automatically get 10 years for using a weapon. Mind you we have to pay for the scum bag to be in jail but over ten years he can graduate from law school and become everones best friend a lawyer.
Agree, minimum 10 year sentences. And while we are at it, there is absolutely no way that prisoners should be allowed to vote. You have lost that right while in the can. And while we are at it, how about becoming productive by let’s say starting a chain gang mentality of sorts.
This tough on crime stance that the conservatives is a lot of crap in my opinion. Sure be tough on crime, but how about do something to combat the cause of crime. In most cases that is poverty. Combat poverty and crime will go down huge. Minimum sentances do nothing to prevent crime. Most criminals only think about the consequences after they have done the crime. It is statistically proven that minimum sentancesis not a deterrant.
Disagree totally BillyS. Most definitely sentences and being in jail is a deterent. Once inside, means you cannot do the crime outside. Lots of people have lived in poverty, bettered themselves and are find productive citizens all without being criminals. That crutch my friend is a typical socialist mentality. Let's be soft on crime and throw all kinds of money at the root of the problem. Without people being resposible for their actions. Society is not to blame, people the ones that cannot live with us and within the rules and laws are.
Billy you are right that would help but in most jurisdictions crime provention is in place and this has not helped. Yes poverty is the big problem and you have hit the nail on the head. The problem is a large portion of people are not getting the education required to make a living. If you do not have this you either turn to crime (the easy way under the liberals) or you work two to three jobs to survive. So yes this is a big factor. Rehab is the other answer. I have heard the guy that ends up in prision and uses his time for an education either comes out as a smarter criminal ( easy way remember) or they actually contribute. The problem is that you need a balnce you need a deterent also.
I don't have a real problem with minimum sentences, My problem is that the conservatives don't plan on doing anything to help people to not take the "easy way out." And if you think it was the easy way out during the liberal reighn, it will be even harder for those to survive under the conservative reign, so it will be an even easier chaice for potential criminals to make.
and argotom, there are stats out there ( idon't have them, but I have seen them), that show places that have implemented minimum sentanceing, do not have any kind of drop in crime. Its the same with Capital punishment, which I am suprised no one has brought up in this election. I would not be suprised if there is a majority conservative gov't that the death penalty is re introduced. I hope I'm wrong.
Billy check out the stats for the state of Texas. Crime doesnot go down just crime with weapons. Billy you are right poverty is the big contributor to crime. But you have to remember white collar crime is caused by poverity.
We all agree this is a complex issue, with many factors tied in which makes the solution as complex. With the Liberals being way too easy on crime, I dont recall them suggesting or implementing measures to attempt to deal with poverty. Same which has been an issue since the beginning of time. I am not sure what you mean the Conservatives "don't plan on doing anything.....". Being serious about crime, is a beginning and more then Martin has done. And since you brought it up, why not have a vote on Capital Punishment for 1st degree murder or heniuos crimes.
why not??? because Capital punishment is absolutely archaic, and is generally useless. First of all innocent people are being killed, and it is the government that is literally pulling the trigger. I am sorry but if there is even one person killed by the government that did not commit the crime, then that is reason enough not to have it. 2nd it is proven to not be a deterrent AT ALL. places with the death penalty in place are usually the places where more crime exists. 3rd it is actually more expensive. There is a lot more legal action that is taken in a capital punishment case, then in a regular one, and all of the appeals and stuff actually cost more on average (in lawyer fees, court fees, etc) then it does to incarcerate a prisoner for their lifetime.
Thats why having a vote on such an issue means it is democratic. Yes, it is a tragedy when an innocent man is put to death, but not nearly as many as you suggest. I say to you it is more of a tragedy when an innocent person is murdered. Period. Capital Punishment when done with irrefutable proof to include DNA is most definitely a deterrent. The criminal will no re-offend. Unlike our rediculous criminal and justice system. Where a "maximum" sentence or "life" is anything but. Only to have some murderers being released to kill again.
you are confused, or misinformed. If a person is sentanced to life without parole, then that is excatly wht it is. Life. They are there till they die. period. So there is no worry about them commiting future crime in society. Most murders, and crimes that are capital punishment crimes, are ones that are done in a "fit of passion" where consequences and deterents do not register. Do you think Paul Bernardo thought about the consequences. no he is just a sick nut job, who did terrible things. lock him up for his life. To me it would be a lot scarier to have to live in a prison for the rest of my life, then to have a needle stuck in my arm and never wake up. I am not as scared of death as I am of rotting in a prison.
And I say it is more of a tragedy for a government to legally murder someone who has done nothing, then an innocent being killed on the street for his bike. One could be easily prevented, the other probably not.
First let me start by saying I have not decided where I stand on Capital Punishment.
Red, How many innocent people have to be put to deth before it is enought?
How many "convicted murderers" have been freed over the past few years because DNA hace cleared. Its a good thing we did not have capital punishemnt when they were convicted.
I was reading somewhere where crime shows like CSI(Love the show hate the B.S.) have caused the more informed criminal to begin planting hair smples and the like on their victims to throw suspision elsewhere.
In cases like these the DNA proves the wrong guy did it!
We agree to disagree. But, I would be willing to accept and ONLY IF life meant life in jail. No chance to see the light of day again. Sadly, in this country a maximum sentence or life is far from it. There is no such sentence. The current max is 25 years with parole available at 15-17 years.
I believe the last time a serious poll was taken on Capital Punishment, the vast majority something along 70% were in favour. That is democracy at work.
