Agree with you Steve! I was hoping the Ticats would sign him last time he hit FA and Medlock departed for the 'Peg and maybe they tried but TO beat them to it. Anyway he's almost a local guy, said he already practices quite a bit in Hamilton so I wouldn't be surprised if he fills the kicking role on the team long term - assuming he has no injury or performance problems. He had a rough second year in the 'Peg but seems to have been pretty solid the past couple of years in TO. I watched him kick the winning FG at the GC in Ottawa too!
Even if he doesn't have the top-end FG range of a guy like Medlock, he removes any uncertainty around the kicking game. Since he does all three kicking jobs, it frees up a roster spot that would otherwise be "wasted" on a punting specialist. That roster spot can be used for depth at another position and special teams. And while Hajrullahu doesn't count toward the 7 non-import starters, he also doesn't tie up one of the (maximum) 20 import roster spots.
We're in this scenario:
1 non-import kicker
3 qbs
20 other non-imports
20 imports
instead of this:
1 import kicker
3 qbs
21 non-imports
19 other imports
or this:
2 non-import kickers
3 qbs
19 other non-imports
20 imports
or this:
1 import kicker
1 non-import kicker
3 qbs
20 other non-imports
19 other imports
Who could ever forget Bernie . He was quite the character . 8)I still remember sitting up in the stands when he played and hearing the leather lungs at Ivor Wynne screaming "SMOKE IT BERNIE" every time he came in to kick . ;D
and.....
Speaking of playing forever , it's hard to believe that the way we cycle through kickers as of late practically getting a new one every season that the 24 years between 1980 and 2003 that we only had 2 kickers in that entire time......the aforementioned Ruoff (80-87) and the legendary Ozzie (86-03) .
Even more ironic is that the only reason we wound up with Ozzie was because Ruoff got injured halfway thru the "86" season and the team signed some unknown rookie named Osbaldiston who had already had stints in BC and Wnp that season as his replacement. The rest as they say is history . 8)
