NHL 2024 off-season

Absolutely. And that is why guys like Matthew Tkachuk, who was traded for Huberdeau, don’t need to be paid as much. There are also advantages to playing in say Toronto, New York, LA and probably Chicago and Philly as far as the ability to earn off ice revenue.

I’d like to see some guys like Drai and McDavid take a little less to have a better shot at winning the Cup too. Would the world really end if you only made $10M instead of 14? Or even 7?

Rogers 12 year NHL $5.2B Television contract expires in 2 years(after the 2025-26 season)
Would they even consider re-upping

I’d be ok if the rights went back to TSN, assuming they can get their good broadcasters back.

Would prefer the NHL on TSN/CTV myself with some sort of a sub licensing agreement with either CBC or Global (for the sake of Global under the banner NHL '25).

Or it can be split amongst the two private sports channels with the CBC being in the mix on a part time bases.

Ranking NHL teams by tiers: The bottom 16

An article that doesn’t list Minnesota or Winnipeg at either 16 or 17 is hogwash. They demand respect in being the most “mid” teams in the NHL.

Washington, Pittsburgh, Ottawa and Buffalo are in this section. Talk about an Eastern bias!

Pretty sure Buffalo has been “1 season away from the playoffs” for the last 10 seasons or so.

There is only one thing that always strikes me about all this pre-season ranking. That is simply that some team - somewhere in the league - will rise above their ranking - like Nashville last season.

Good that you posted part 2 after yesterday’s part 1. Always an interesting read. Like everyone else I could criticize and nitpick many of the rankings but will only criticize the top 3. Instead of Florida, Edmonton and NYR I would have Florida, Dallas and Colorado, with Nashville knocking on the door.

Take out Rangers, insert Jersey in the top 4. Jersey made the playoffs last season with what amounted to no goal tending…

And replace Colorado with Nashville. Colorado has lost skill and experience plus Central has too many “free square” games with half the division being weak.

I certainly don’t get your love for Jersey. They should be better this year but not that much better.

Love your take on the Central, perennially the league’s strongest division as it was last year again. If there is a free space on the bingo card it’s usually the Pacific.

I will be cheering the Oilers to the Stanley Cup again this season because come playoffs…they will get beat by what you called the worst goaltender in the league, again…

I know you’ll be cheering the Oilers but sorry, I can’t make heads or tails of the rest of your post.

There has apparently been some ongoing pressure on the NHL to adjust it’s salary cap as a result of the huge obvious advantage that no personal income tax states have and in particular how that negatively affects Canadian teams. A lot of the usual doublespeak from Daly and Bettman. The players quoted aren’t very helpful either.

It’s good to know this is an issue, but unfortunately it looks like it will be some time still before any adjustments to the cap are made, if they ever are made,

I’m not sure how related or if at all relative to the cap rules, but I’m going to guess they are not going to address that “bad spleen” situation as has been used such as by my Golden Knights before the playoffs?

Thank you for taking my call. I’ll go ahead and hang up now and listen to the show.
