I’m always sad to see CFL guys released but on the other hand, they can always come north again. I’ll always welcome back the top-tier talent. I just hope Betts doesn’t sign with an East Division team.
It’s the same drill every year and must be brutal for the guys not only to be cut, but also to have to wait until the very last hours before the deadline, unlike Nathan Rourke and Austin Mack released early enough to be back ready to play and Austin Mack now under a new contract for years.
For those players cut who have CFL experience, the guys at age 28 or older are also at a sudden career crossroads now.
For those with limited or no NFL regular-season game experience, these players face either another season on practice rosters and yet another off-season leading to another camp with dimmer prospects, or they can actually return to the CFL and have their chance to play very soon.
We’ll see who else comes back, though at this point with the season starting earlier, essentially these players are only available as soon as next weekend provided they make a decision before this weekend.
This timing leaves only 6 or 7 regular season games in the 2024 season, but of course there are the playoffs too.
It’s now time for them to fish or cut bait.
Of course a few of these players could also just decide to not come back for a short CFL season and just continue to train on the grind in the NFL on a practice roster and then examine their options anew in December.
It always interests me when an NFL team does this to sign a former player only after the ordeal of camp for so many players for up to five weeks, plus of course all the off-season training those players have to do in order to show up to camp in professional shape, with all but the less than 50 players per team who are not quarterbacks, kickers, punters or long snappers to be cut.
Dalvin Cook is only 29 years old, which is “old” for an NFL running back though apparently plenty of gas left in that tank after off-season recovery from shoulder surgery.
Yes but half of them go right back on practice rosters and or injured lists. Don’t expect too many Canadians coming to the CFL before the off season. They’ll hang around to see if they are picked up as there is always injury openings. To much money at stake coming to the CFL on a rookie salary.
Yes , too much money in NFL. No one becomes a millionaire in CFL, it is for the love of the game. Lots of money in the pro sports. CFL guys are nuts to break their bones for nothing much but the G C. Love them!!!
After reading this update, I don’t feel that Rourke even had a real chance in Atlanta even if he did perform well, and then maybe practice roster at best.
The Los Angeles Chargers, in need of depth behind franchise quarterback Justin Herbert, are acquiring Heinicke in a trade with the Atlanta Falcons, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported. Atlanta is getting back a 2025 conditional sixth-round pick from Los Angeles which will be based off Heinicke’s playing time.
Heinicke remaining on the Falcons’ roster behind Kirk Cousins and Michael Penix Jr. at Tuesday’s roster deadline was somewhat surprising. However, they found a team in need as the Chargers saw backup Easton Stick struggle mightily in the preseason and cut Luis Perez on Tuesday.
I find it interesting though that a few Canadian guys are not on practice rosters. Mattheiu Betts being one of them. I would not be surprised if he is back in the CFL. The Lions are in dire need of him. The next few days will tell though.
The CFL has a NFL-only released player draft this week? Edmonton gets to pick first? Montreal picks last? Picking order is based on current win/loss records? How many rounds?
