STAN MIKAWOS,
Many years ago, I with my 2 sons were in attendance at a Bombers home game in the early 90’s. The Bombers always had an opportunity for guests who arrive early can hang out in the south end zone with jumping castles , rides and games of chance. This also allowed for fans to watch the pre-game warm-up. In those day sports cards were very popular, I would bring cards of the 2 teams at play in hopes to get them signed. One game we (I, the children were elsewhere having fun) achieved several signings of players who were not dressed for that game. As the on field players made their way back to the locker room I, with both sons at my side asked Stan Mikawos for his autograph, Stan, needing to get into the locker room quickly, looked at me and said I will come back in awhile…the game was about to start, fans had to clear the field. Disappointed but understanding ,we took our seats ,we were in section A about 10 / 12 rows up. The 2 teams occupied the field and after the National anthem I seen Stan Mikawos walking back and forth on the sideline looking into the crowd. He spotted me, ran up the stairs from the field to our seats and proceeded to sign our cards. He looked me in the eye and said, I made you a promise…Just another reason to love the CFL, my son reminded me of that story recently, after he got back from the banjo bowl with my grandson.
Great story WGTC👍
Was sitting in the stands at Taylor feild when Big Bill Baker who was a long time Rider asked to be traded to BC as his day job asked to move to Vancouver.
Any way we were right behind the BC bench and lots of fans would heckle the opposition. Baker took the brunt of the harrament and really did a great job of pretending not yo hear the crdp said.
With about 5 minutes to go in the game the fans had finally left the heckling fall by the way side as the Lions were losing badly. I shouted out “Your still green Baker”. He turned around looked right me and smiled and gave me a big thumbs up and walked over the rail to talk to me for a few minutes. He said he was sorry to leave Regina and even more sorry he sacked Ron Lancaster on the second play of the game too .
Love the story rider01.1👍
Don’t know if Fleming ever commented on that play in '63. I’ve watched the replay several times. A dirty play? I don’t think the question will ever be settled. Could Mosca have avoided the hit? Or was Mosca himself a " victim" of momentum and his own size. Fleming was already down but Mosca was travelling at full speed. Was it a late hit? I believe so. Something similar happened in the game between the
Bombers and SSK a few weeks back when Collaros got taken out for concussion protocol. Remember that play?
Mosca had a reputation. A nasty reputation and always played on the edge. I think that affects people’s perception.
Was Mosca genuinely trying to avoid contacting Fleming, the Lions number one running back or just trying to make it look like it hoping to do some serious damage?
The way I see it, Mosca flew over Fleming but made enough contact to take Fleming out of the game. I don’t think he could have slowed his momentum but did he make enough of an effort to avoid hitting Fleming? Only Mosca could answer that question.
That’s so cool.
Long time Lions fan and I remember watching that Mosca/Fleming hit as it happened and to this day I still believe it was a good hit. Just hard played football. Not a popular opinion out here on the coast still all these years later.
Answer to follow…trying to avoid a duplicate post.
…No problem with how you saw it Munsey. But I do differ with your opinion that it was as a “good” hit. How can it be considered a good hit when Fleming was pretty much out of bounds and already prostrate on the ground? I’m not saying it was an illegal hit. But I believe Mosca knew full well where Fleming was before flying head first over him. Though there was no penalty called on the hit doesn’t in my mind make it a clean hit.
Yes football is a rough and tough sport but I don’t think it unreasonable to assume that some players are out there head hunting. Take out some key players and you improve your chances of winning.
What I wonder is how Mosca got the reputation he got over the years. Likely because he did a lot of stuff that was highly questionable in the eyes of both fans and players alike.
As I mentioned I don’t think the question as to whether the hit was disingenuous or not will ever be answered …to everyone’s satisfaction.
I have another great memory. This had nothing to do with the game but something that happened in the stands.
2011, Empire Field, Stamps vs Lions. I was sitting in the stands about the 5 yd line. Close to me was a guy about my age sitting alone and wearing a Stamps jersey. I had heard of the name on the back but it didn’t mean a lot to me. I said to him, “You must either be a die hard Stamps fan or nuts to ware that jersey in here”. He just smiled and said, “My son, it’s his first Start tonight”. The name, CORNISH, a proud PaPa. I’ll never forget that.
Is it possible, Munsey, that the guy who claimed to be Jon Cornish’s dad was pulling your leg? Why I ask that is because according to Jon Cornish his father passed away while he (Jon) was in college. This would have been 5 years or so before 2011. I’m assuming the source I got this info is accurate. I know the mother , Margaret, was not with the father for several years.
Toss up…
1986 East Final, Game 2 in Toronto at old Exhibition Stadium. Me and 3 other buddies went to the game on the bus ( a least 13 buses left from the Centre Mall) . We were down by 14 going into the game and were down 26 before things got rolling. Then the Tiger-Cats decided to show up and proceeded to destroy the Argonauts and win the Two Game/Total Point series en route to winning the Grey Cup the following week.
1998 East Final at Ivor Wynne Stadium. We got up on Montreal in the first half and went stone cold in the 2nd half. Montreal took the lead on a late touchdown. We got the ball back and it looked like we had blown it . Ozzy kicks a Field Goal from the Montreal 54 and puts it though the uprights. Place went berserk!!!
I donèt know what to tell you. That’s what the guy said. Cornish was basiclly a rookie at the time and he was wearing his jersey. A true story. It would be nice to know though.
I don’t doubt the validity of the story. I just think the guy was putting you on. As I said, it was Jon Cornish himself who said in an interview that his father passed away when Jon was in college. It could not have been Jon’s father sitting beside you. Not sure why the guy would have said that to you.
As far as Cornish being a rookie, he was not a rookie in 2011. He played with Calgary from 2007 to 2015. He even won a Grey Cup ring in 2008!
You might want to do some research on “Phil Cornish” to find out when he passed on.
Well what the hell! Who was that then.
How much money did he ask for😁
Lol. Ummm…an apparition perhaps? What you now need to do is rid that fond memory of 12 years out of your head.
It’s possible the guy didn’t appreciate your remark and this was his way of one upping you. Who knows?
I finally got to witness another return TD!
A game-changing 115 yards in front of an ecstatic home crowd!
Everyone who was in the arena to witness that will remember it for the rest of their lives!
The hardcore fans, the casual fans, the folks out for a day out, the family of English tourists in the seats behind me, everyone has a new special memory from last night.
Very nicely stated!
I’m sure it was 2011 he became a starter. Cornish flourishing as Calgary’s starter - CFL.ca
