MORE BOLTS FOR GREY CUP!!

Maybe they should keep it 'til he 100th GC, and put that one away (hall of fame) and make a new one.

The Grey Cup showed its age Sunday night as the trophy broke in two during the B.C. Lions’ celebration on the winners’ podium at Canad Inns Stadium.

The bowl that rests on top of the base came off after it was passed to Lions guard Kelly Bates, the hardware apparently no match for the six-foot-three 296-pound product of the University of Saskatchewan. “I just started shaking it and it snapped,” Bates said. “What are you going to do?”

It made for an odd sight as players suddenly had two pieces of hardware to pass around on the podium. Once they returned to the dressing room, some players hoisted the base of the cup in the air while others took turns sipping from the top portion, which looked more like a large, odd-looking beer mug than a championship trophy.

“I’m still happy, they’ll put it back together and we’ll go get drunk out of it,” Bates said with a laugh after taking a healthy gulp of the frothy brew.

At first, many of the reporters in the room weren’t sure who broke it, but kicker Paul McCallum erased any doubt.

“Kelly Bates broke the Cup!” McCallum yelled with a huge grin on his face. His teammates and a red-faced Bates broke into laughter as they hugged and celebrated their victory.

The piece that broke off is actually the original trophy that was donated by Lord Earl Grey in 1909. The base has grown over the years as more champions have been crowned.

“We apologized for that,” head coach and GM Wally Buono said with a chuckle. “That’s why I wouldn’t sign the waiver that (team president) Bob (Ackles) did.”

The 2006 Lions will take the second-last free spot on the trophy. A CFL spokesman said in the off-season, league officials will discuss whether to add another rung to make room for the 2008 champions.

“I do remember when I had it in '98 that they told you not to grab it by the handles,” said Lions quarterback Dave Dickenson. “So obviously we didn’t get enough education before we handled it this time.”

Must have been the Argos’ fault.

And in 1993, it was again broken when Edmonton's Blake Dermott head-butted it.
I wonder if he had his helmet on?

One other thing that hasn’t been mentioned was the time someone apparently saw fit to use the Cup as an umbrella stand.
