Thought they might have it with the Grey Cup again, since its in Vancouver, but Montreal is good too. Should be a good game. Some Saturday viewing during Grey Cup week.
I'm a bit surprised it is being held in Montreal too since it was held in Quebec City in 2013. So odds are another home crowd for Laval. I thought it would be out in Vancouver too.
Yeah don't know why it's so hard for the organizers of the grey cup and vanier cup to get together to have it at the same venue or area to make it a bigger event for the two of them. Last year they tried using the excuse of Saskatchewan having no room for there hotels and now this year it's in Vancouver should not have a problem with hotels and they book it in Montreal. It's such a great idea for them to have it in the same city that other media types that might not cover the vanier cup would be inclined to cover the game if they are there for the grey cup. Same with scouts, agents, players,gm etc.. As well the vanier cup gets a lot more exposure having it in the grey cup city they had two of the biggest crowds in vanier cup history in toronto and b.c. The last time they did it.
Completely agree 1991. Both in Vancouver and Toronto - a game I went to - thousands of fans who went to the Grey Cup game also went to the Vanier Cup on the Friday night and both those games between Mac and Laval had electric crowds of people from all over the country and both got great media coverage because all the national football media was in town.
This is a big disappointment in my opinion and a loss for college football in Canada for not playing the game in Vancouver along with the Grey Cup. The 2012 gave will be forever remembered as one of the most exciting football games ever with my beloved McMaster winning for the first time. The 2013 game was just electric.
CIS and Vanier isn't what it was to me when TSN carried the Vanier. 360 I don't get with my basic cable so Vanier not available. To me Rogers and Sportsnet is just marketing to youngsters which is fine, CIS doesn't care obviously about my older types.
Actually, there’s a good chance that it will be a home crowd for the Montréal Carabins. Last season they were arguably the second best team in the CIS. Laval beat them 14-11 in the Dunsmore Cup game. The Carabins return most of their starters and have recruted very well during the off-season.
Not sure how well that’s working out competing with the Grey Cup rather than being part of it?
Vanier Cup TV ratings down 64 per cent from 2012
NUMBERS ARE IN: The 2012 Vanier Cup was the height of success on TV and in the ratings books. A total of 911,000 watched the whole game, with over three million tuning into some 15 minute portion of the game on TSN.
Fast forward to 2013, and it would seem that the CIS is starting all over again.
Sportsnet did their best by simulcasting last month’s final on the main network and the home for the OUA, SN360. The numbers did not follow. Competing with Grey Cup Saturday on TSN, the numbers plummeted 64 per cent from the previous year, down to 301,000.
That’s the “I don’t agree” part  If you have an opportunity to be part of the biggest sporting event in the country, why would you not want that ? Maybe the CFL not making room for them last year created some political rift?
This is more to do with being on Rogers.... Rogers always gets lower ratings then TSN for the same programeing... Whether it is the Blow Jays (back in the day) or the Craptors... TSN always beats Rogers. This is the presice reason Rogers is going to lose billions of dollars on their TV deal with the NHL... Fewer people will watch nationally televised cable games on Rogers then on TSN... Rogers is hoping to steal TSN's customers... I think this may happen to some degree, but people more people will chose to watch whatever TSN has on instead of hockey, or do something completely diferent.... TSN is the pros... Rogers is a joke.
The Als have been talking about hosting for a couple of years now and most likley were waiting for the 50th to do so.
McGill is all reno's and ready to go for such an event.
Vancouver wanted nothing to do with the Vanier Cup. The Grey and Vanier pairng was more to do with TSN having the rights to televise both games so doubtful you will se that again.
With 17 of the CIS football schools in Ontario or Quebec most likley we will see the Vanier cup make its stops in Ottawa and Hamilton's new stadiums IMHO where fans can make reasonable travel arrangements via rail or drive and in cities with plaenty of lodging (Hamilton having close lodging via GTA)
Exactly.
Rogers pushed the CIS to pull the Vanier from the same site as the Grey Cup since they signed the TV deal. Rogers was/is promising to greatly expand the profile of all the CIS’s major sporting championships and unfortunately, the CIS has bought into this hook line and sinker. The Vanier is no where near strong enough of a property to be on its own and greatly benefits from being paired with the Grey Cup.
Off course with Rogers at the helm, we all know this thing can’t possibly fail right?
Last season it did not seem like Rogers did anything new with CIS football that was not already there before. 360 still showed only an OUA game of the week and the semi final bowls and Vanier Cup were televised as well.
The other 3 conferences still had games of the week with the networks they had before which were basically Regional Networks. 360 should at least have a game of the week from the other conferences in addition to their regional network providers.
Considering the loss of exposure. I would be really curious to know how much the CIS is making from this deal. Maybe someone got a nice brown envelope...
I’d hate to think there’s any truth to this idea but ultimately, not matching up with the Grey Cup game is just stupid. You’ve got thousands of football fans in town, all the game’s who’s who and you don’t hold your national final on the Friday night before the big game? Dumb. Dumb. Dumb. Do they not remember the crowds for the 2012 and 2007 Vaniers held in TO before the GC games that year?
