Of course, all of this is speculation & fun to look at. I’m certainly no expert on the draft. I like a lot of these picks because they address needs. FWIW…
I’d be shocked if Calgary took a QB because they are looking for immediate help. They really need another LB behind Sopik. I’d get one in the #8 slot, maybe even #1. They have quite a few good CDN DB’s with Labrosse & picking up a couple more in FA.
I agree the Als will look at DL as they likely start 2 CDN’s @ DE but I see them going for a WR before OL.
I would expect the REDBLACKS to get a WR early as they literally have no one behind Mardner who likely is slotted in as the sole CDN starter there. A DB would be a good choice as well as their backfield likely has 5 new starters this year.
Rourke in Wpg - maybe. I do think they will be looking for a QB in FA next year unless Zach gets them to another GC & wins it. I’m not sure he could stick around if they lose another Cup with him at the helm.
But, yeah, IMO this mock draft looks pretty good overall.
Seriously Rourke is headed to the NFL at least temporarily and Calgary have already stated they will not waste picks on future prospects this year. They need help immediately.
Makes no sense for Cal to draft a receiver with the first pick with holes elsewhere in the lineup. They have Philpot and Barnes as beaver receivers. Both are young and very talented.
Makes a lot more sense for them to draft Shay at #1 because they are really thin at LB.
The OL is also razor thin, so if Andersen or Shanks is still on the board at 8th, why wouldn’t they pick him?
I don’t have a problem with Cal drafting a QB in the second round. They need to groom a youngster as QB and they haven’t been able to find one from the US, so why not shop locally?
I was totally opposed to Dickey being re-upped as GM and HC. Why do I have this nagging feeling that Dickey is intent on drafting Rourke at #1, and he is daring his staff to convince him otherwise?
Also would anybody be surprised if Dickey traded the #1 pick for a later first rounder and an extra draft pick in the fifth round? I wouldn’t as I have zero faith in Dickey. In fact, I predict by Labour Day, Dave will be out as coach and be replaced by brother Craig.
Until somebody in the org has the wisdom to punt both Dave and Craig back to Montana, the Stamps are going to be the dregs of the West.
Barnes and Philpot are both good enough to start, but with the new and improved receiving corps, one or both will likely be under utilized. I see Barnes bolting at the end of the season as a FA, so there is a case for drafting a receiver this year, but at#1? No. The kid would get little playing time except on special teams. Dickey talked about using the first pick for a guy who can make an immediate impact. A linebacker or an offensive lineman would tick that box. Those are two spots the Stamps are very thin at.
If Dickey drafts a QB in the first round, he should be tarred and feathered and run out of town ASAP.
What about Cal trading the #1 pick to BC for I don’t know what and then the Leos drafting Rourke? That would be nuts!
Good comments. I would not be surprised if 1 of the 1st rounders get traded for a veteran & dropping down in the draft. Probably # 8 - by that time there may be teams who have someone in mind & may want to move up before they get picked up.
Trading the 8th pick to BC seems possible, but if Dickey does it to secure an extra pick after the third round, more proof he is out of control and needs to be sacked. He shouldn’t trade a first-rounder unless the player coming back is a starter and I don’t mean on special teams only.
Dickey was nuts to trade Judge, a Canadian LB for an American DL, but perhaps Dickey can correct this mistake by drafting Shay. Cal needs a high-end Canadian offensive lineman because not only are they razor thin with Canadian hoggies, but the two projected American starters didn’t impress last season.
LB at #1, OL at #8, and if one of the stud QBs at #17 if one is still available.
I doubt it., he will not be in the CFL anytime soon. and he is being way over hyped, just like his brother when he returned to CFL. BC will regret their QB choice, so will whoever drafts his brother
This day and age it seems its fashionable to have a CDN QB. I bet you The Stamps could trade one of their 1st rounders to someone who just had to have one and in the process take them to the cleaners so to speak
Picking a potential replacement for VA three years down the road is not worse than picking a guy that retires before ever playing a down. There are several examples of that lately. Have to wonder what the issue is. Entry level wages?
Don’t bet on that. It is often the case that a returning QB needs a year to find his grove especially if he spends a year or more down south kicking tires. We went through
that with Henry. Big dropoff when he returned.
A Cdn QB would be years from making it as a starter, Rourke was the exception because of his time in NFL camps.
The need is always O-linemen to protect your QB, it’s a Cdn position and not enough good ones to go around so you better take an O-lineman in the 1st round.
Since nobody is going to step up guess i will. Burris threw for 4600 yards before leaving the first time. When he returned to the 11-7 Riders in 03’ he threw for 110 yards in 10 games and had a 45% completion percentage. He was soundly outplayed by Nealon Greene. In 04’ he began to return to form.
Back to the draft. WR isn’t a bad idea as you need depth to maintain the ratio. Is there someone in any position that they can get and who can start now? Most draft picks are special teams, rotation players or the PR initially.
