A few days ago I learned of the passing of Maurice “Mo” Renaud. He was the long-time gameday announcer at Winnipeg Stadium. So I encouraged my friend Morris the Poet to ink something in memory of Mo. Don’t think its one of Morris’s best works, but at least he rose to the occasion.
If it just picks up the day of one person, even from one or two lines, the poet has done his/her job. Thanks for reading.
**Voice of Blue and Gold**
In Winnipeg’s grand old stadium, under skies so blue and wide,
Echoed a voice of passion, filling seats on every side.
Maurice “Mo” Renaud, the herald of the Bombers’ fight,
Near 600 games, his calls a beacon in the night.
Through frigid nights and summer’s fire, his spirit never wavered,
A part of every triumph, each touchdown, deeply savoured.
With Matheson and Blanchard’s jests, he wore a knowing grin,
A titan of the gameday, where camaraderie would win.
He painted games in vivid hues, his words a master’s brush,
Transforming plays to legends with each electrifying rush.
The stadium as theatre, and he, its bard be true,
Crafting moments unforgettable, in his beloved blue.
No greater honour can be said, for fans and foes alike,
Than hearing Mo announce the game, each cheer, each groan, each spike.
And now his microphone stands still, his echoes linger on,
In hearts and minds of many, long after he is gone.
So here’s to you, dear Maurice, press box legacy so grand,
A voice that spoke of passion, pride and every hero’s stand.
Winnipeg’s rich sports history, your name forever sown,
The voice of blue and gold, his legend now full blown.
