MMQB: Ranking the CFL's top offensive linemen

“They all have their space to be terrible.”

Those words from Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach Mike O’Shea still stick with me more than six months later. O’Shea was talking following Winnipeg’s 41-24 loss to Toronto in the 111th Grey Cup, the team’s third consecutive loss in the biggest game of the season.

The Bombers got a lot of love from PFF in the final awards & positions on the All-Star squad but OL wasn’t one of them. There were others more worthy on OL than Bryant & Lofton. To believe it was close between Ivez & Bryant is disrespectful to Ivez. This from PFF:

“Ivey has long been one of the CFL’s top run blockers, but 2024 marked his best season in pass protection as well. He didn’t allow a single sack and posted a 97.8 pass-blocking efficiency score. He also led the league by a wide margin with an 85.7 run-block grade.”

Bryant had the HIGHEST Bomber pass blocking grade @ 67.1 & Lofton…well. The Bombers also played at least 6 OL for extra protection more than anyone in the CFL. Pierce, judging by pre-season, is bringing that to the Lions to shore up their protection.

A quote from 3DN after the 2 regular season games.

“In their two games against the Blue Bombers this season, the Argos have tallied 12 total sacks and created nine turnovers.” 'Nuff said.

I also find it interesting that you only have one Guard position, rather than LG & RG. I can’t argue with your choices at Guard. Hunter rightfully was OL Player of the Year but split his time between G & T so I get that.

Apparently the top O-linemen in the league all come from the west division. How original.

Didn’t notice that but, yeah, that’s a great point.

Callendar @ 73.2 was rightfully a 2nd team All-Star behind Ivez. Lawrence @ 72.6 was a 1st team All-Star. Lestage was the highest rated Guard in the CFL with a 75.3 overall grade. Anything over 70 is really good.
