MMQB: Pleasant surprises at the three-quarter mark

With Week 16 in the books, we have officially passed the three-quarter mark of the 2023 season. While there’s still a ton to play for in this final stretch, I thought now would be a good time to identify some of the positive surprises from the season thus far. It turns out, narrowing it down was difficult but here’s what we came up with.

Oddly, individual defenders on weak teams tend to have more opportunities to shine despite allowing more yards or points.

Micha Awe probably has the CFL hear office as a favorite “Pay Too” on his internet banking app since he gets fined so often. Yet again he showed his true colors this week earning the leagues first spearing penalty this season.
He’s going to end up like Odell Willis, an awesome player nobody wants because of all the crap that comes with having him on their roster.

Agreed, how does Awe rate as a ‘pleasant surprise’ with continued dirty play? He’s going to cripple someone soon at this rate. Hey, Steinburg, aren’t you allowed to say anything critical?

I like TSN’s take on this since the thing in Regina last year. Having Dunnigan pull up more film from the same game of him doing the same thing really puts the league office on the spot. It’s not just a single incident. He does it all the time.

The only surprise from Awe would be if he dropped the dirty hits. That would be a pleasant surprise.

Dirtiest player this year always using his helmet. He should be taken out for a few games. Three times he hit people with his helmet in his last game. Don’t fine him --Can him!

I’d put Hollins on this list as well. He’s having a breakout season & is a lot of fun to watch. Lots of candidates but can’t disagree with anyone except Awe. Emilius deserves a nod from the Riders IMO.

Tyreek McAllister, Hamiton Tiger-Cats. :+1:
