Good luck to the Whitecaps this afternoon for the MLS Cup. And for their stadium issues in Vancouver also:

Wow decades later, the situation reminds me of when Vancouver had an NBA team.

The change of the timing of the MLS season to align with most of the Northern Hemisphere is a game changer in these regards.

In those regards, I am not too sure about anything planned outdoors for teams based in Detroit or Edmonton.

The Athletic reports that Detroit, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Sacramento, Indianapolis and Edmonton are “monitoring the situation in Vancouver with interest,” and that representatives from two of those cities attended the Whitecaps’ dramatic Western Conference Semifinal win over LAFC.

I love this overdue idea! Mind you when I lived in Atlanta and played as an amateur, this was the timing of the season, with most of the summer off and a long break between some time after Thanksgiving through much of January, and it was better than the common schedule in the US and in Canada.

The 2027-28 MLS regular season will begin in mid-to-late July 2027 and conclude with the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs and MLS Cup presented by Audi in late May 2028.

Like other major international leagues, MLS will observe a midwinter break from mid-December through early February, with no league matches scheduled in January.

Before the calendar change, MLS will stage a transition season from February to May 2027, featuring a 14-game regular season, playoffs, and MLS Cup.

That part about the midwinter break in other major leagues is not true as stated though, for most leagues in Europe have plenty of matches in December and in January, though not quite as many in January yet still more than before the expansion of Champions League that began in autumn 2024.

But I like it as stated for MLS and other leagues in North America!

That transition season needs a serious rebranding, for essentially it is its own “MLS Champions League” if you will instead of a regular league season.

By 2027 MLS is likely to be beyond the current Messi Mania phase, which they are milking for all it’s worth for 2026 due to the World Cup, so there’s a serious opportunity for a hot rebrand and launch there instead of being majorly lame and referring to that season as a “transition.”

Interesting about the Whitecaps, according to this they are valued at the $470 million mark. Just thinking, imagine if they win the MLS Cup today and the owners get up on the stage and get interviewed, hmm, what are they going to say? “We love this team, we love the city of Vancouver so much, we’re so proud to be owners of the team and how the city has supported us, we have a great lease….. etc.” I think they’ll be very low key and just let the players and coaches do the talking actually come to think of it. If I was them.

bummer

Just watched the TSN highlights, Caps played fairly well it seems and put up a decent fight. Around 20,000 at BC Place to watch it on the screen, excellent support. See how the lease talks go on from here, I’m sure it’ll get worked out fine for the team. I doubt they will be moving anywhere. As to who they might be sold to, who knows, or if they will be sold.

This was a lifetime win for David Beckham on many fronts as well.

“[The MLS Cup win] has been pretty surreal and it’s a moment that I’ll cherish forever, being a player that has won it and now being an owner that has won it with this team, and these fans.”

As part of his deal to sign in MLS after starring in Europe, Beckham got the rights to a future expansion team for $25 million, which eventually became Inter Miami and the 2025 MLS Cup champions.

Compared to his predetermined expansion fee, Nashville SC paid $150 million to enter the league the same year as Inter Miami, and the most recent expansion club, San Diego FC, which debuted in 2025, paid $500 million.
