MLS Average attendance down below 21,000 per game!!!

Take away Atlanta (honeymoon) average of 50k per game and Seattle’s 40k per game and all the freebie tix and what would this leagues attendance be! Most of the teams (posted) attendance are well below 20k per game. Novelty of new stadiums will wear off and this league attendance can only go DOWN!!!

Agree!!!

The Usual Suspects LOVE the MLS and hate the CFL. It’s sad because it keeps them from being objective.

Rcon :

Don’t worry about the Usual Suspects and their love for the MLS / hate for the CFL.

One of the Usual Suspects read a post I wrote 8 months ago and here is how he reacted…

It bothered him sooooo much he hung on to that anger for 2/3rds of a YEAR

and responded to it recently with a post so long…

So… just know you are right (righteous like me) and you have taken the “High Road”.

As someone who also ONLY knows that path, it feels pretty good…

It just shows how non-established teams need to have the support of the community in order to be successful.

While teams in LA, Atlanta, Orlando, Portland, Seattle and KC managed to do so, teams like Montreal have failed to connect with the community.

Curious. What is the source for the claim that attendance is down below 21,000 per game?

According to this - after a poor start - at least in part due to the brutal March/April weather that likewise decimated baseball’s early season attendance - with MLS down by as much as 6% overall at one point - the league’s attendance improved.

In fact stronger May through October than last season ending up down just 1% overall with a 21,873 average with a particularly strong last two weeks.

The strong finish to the season is reflected in the final2018 MLS attendancefigures for Week 35, as the circuit ends up just slightly down from 2017’s per-game average.

Last week attendance totaled 383,622 fans in the most well-attended week for2018 MLS attendance, as 15 matches generated some serious numbers. Those serious numbers continued to end the season, with a robust 24,294 fans per match in 11 matches. Almost every team outdrew their season average by healthy margins–welcome news for most of the teams in action. The most important stat when you look at the2018 MLS attendancenumbers: season attendance per match was only down 1 percent. Earlier this year attendance was down some 6 percent year over year thanks to horrendous weather plaguing the early season. This makes for a decent rally, to be sure.

The whole discussion is silly. Until the MLS :

A) Stops giving away tickets by the bucketful,
B) Gives an honest accounting of how many people are in the stands,

the discussion is moot.

And yes, the same could be said about the CFL.

Here are the numbers to date for2018 MLS attendance, as of October 28:

The first set of numbers, at the bottom, are attendance “announced” average. A lot of teams fudged their numbers i.e. TFC announcing “sell-outs”, when the stadiums were half filled.

Re : when the stadiums were half filled.

If that.

There was an MLS playoff game a couple weeks back. There was NO one in the stands. Announced MLS attendance in B.S. - like it is with most Leagues.

Exactly. Teams announce tickets distributed in almost all cases. Toronto FC had something like 24,000 season tickets according to the Argos President. A bunch of those went unused for many games - especially later in the season when TFC had flopped in league play.

I was reading an article that the AVERAGE no-show rate for some MLB teams was over 20%. That’s average - which means some big weekend games would be much smaller and weeknight games against weak drawing opposition would be much higher.

What a bizarre thread :o

Hey let’s not count teams like Seattle and Atlanta because they play in huge stadiums to bring the league average down to 21,000 but ignore the fact that most MLS Stadiums seat less than 22,000 (while the league average is 21,800). lol

The reality is most MLS teams are running at or near capacity (90% or higher) and average stadium capacity will decline slightly next year with Minnesota moving into their beautiful new 19,000 seat stadium next year. This thread is one big fail!

13 teams out of 23 teams have average attendance of less than 20,000 and that includes tons and tons of freebies. 4 of them under 16K and 1 under 13K. The only fail is M(inor)LS!!!

Oh, by the way, if you take away the top 2 teams(which I did not), the average drops to 19,500!!!

Don’t worry about it, rcon. The Usual Suspects will never admit they are wrong, even after the MLS is dead and buried…

13 is more then half of the teams hence the term “most.” I hope that helps. I’m sure there are tons of freebies as there are in most if not all sports league. Average attendance is up nearly 5,000 per game in less then 10 years. Sorry, but facts are facts. This thread is a fail.

I’m pretty sure that rcon is not disputing the fact that “most” MLS teams have an average attendance lower than 20,000. In fact, I think that’s the very point he succeeding in making.

I wish I could remember the 2018 MLS playoff game that had next to no fans in the stands. I was SHOCKED how few fans were there. I would love to see what number they announced.

i turned TSN on that same night and saw the same thing. Very few at the game and it was a playoff contest. I am sure in the eyes of the MLS it was SOLD OUT.

Internet says MLS teams are still giving away 20 % of the total gate. They also say only tickets distributed are reported including freebees, must be a league directive. I would not mind but they (MLS fans) think the whole world is watching when we know it to be untrue. The other point is the discussion around the MLS playoffs. What discussion

It will be interesting to see what sort of ratings they get for the MLS Cup next Saturday night. It will be in front of a record MLS Cup crowd of likely over 70,000 in Atlanta as they host Portland. The game is on at 8:00PM ET on the main Fox network.

So no conflict with the Army-Navy football game in the late afternoon like last year. With Atlanta involved should top the 2 million viewers they drew between Fox and Unimas (Spanish TV) for the 2016 game with Seattle and TFC.
