MLS attendance falling

Only 3 out of 23 teams (Cincinnati new team so doesn’t have last year to compare) have had an increase in attendance. One of the increase is Columbus, who have gone up 5 percent. Looks good but they have gone from 12,447 per game to 13,038. Two teams are down by over 20 percent. Overall the league is down 7 percent to just 20,282 per game which include 2 teams averaging over 40,000 per game. How long will the expansion fees keep this league from folding!!!

2019 MLS Attendance

With only six matches on the schedule for Week 16 of 2019 MLS attendance, the league matched its season average, thanks to healthy crowds in Cincinnati and Chicago.

Here are both season and Week 16 totals for 2019 MLS attendance, as of June 23:

Good job Chicago had a crowd over 15,000 in their last game, or they would be averaging just over 10k. Eek!!!
More than half teams are averaging less than 20K. Ouch!

You must be really concerned about this issue to start a whole new thread when there already is a MLS 2019 thread for this info to be posted in.

With World Cup 2026 on the way I don’t see MLS going anywhere anytime soon, don’t worry.

…does seem odd…“there’s this thing I don’t care for so I’m going to spend a lot of my time on it”…weird

I guess it is not weird when it is someone doing the same thing about the CFL?

How do you know how many soccer players are on the field?

You count the number of purses on the bench! :stuck_out_tongue:

You don’t seem to understand the difference between being critical of something vs. disparaging something.

…you keep going on and on about this cabal of cfl haters on this forum…as moderators, we scan every nook and cranny of it daily, and have yet to uncover this nefarious group of infiltrators…please do let us know what you’re seeing because obviously we’re terrible at our job…thanks in advance…

I agree with Ron, no question to me that some of the people arehere rub snow in our face. How about TP, everything positive about all these US teams in Toronto and spin it so as to discredit the CFL. He doesn’t even post on CFL topics. Also there is a poster on here that has so many names we couldn’t possibly remember them all. He is a TFC and MLS fan. He does throw out the odd positive suggestion but that maybe a mistake on his part.

…lol, damn that’s some incredible evidence there …but I’m going to have to pass taking that in front of the Crown…

PS: what are these US teams that play in Toronto?

I don’t post on CFL topics - or only spin things to discredit the CFL? Oh really?

Give me examples where I trashed the CFL. Not a post where I might have stated a positive fact about another league like all the positive things so many witnessed with the Raptors the last couple of months. And not just a negative observation I may have made about something CFL related (particularly Argos related) just because you don’t like those facts.

Give me just a few examples of all these posts where I trashed the CFL and indicated that I hope it dies?

In the 13 days since the CFL season started.

Multiple posts including one that I spent a lot of time on creating still pictures from video in the Ti-Cats board (and on the TiCats fans Facebook page) on the Simoni Lawrence cheap shot on Zach thread. And I started the thread in the main board once he got the two game suspension.

In the thread where somebody said we need a ‘season reset’ already because of in their words ‘poor gate’, ‘lack of hype’, ‘few compelling games’, - my post in that thread - 'no need to panic, little competition from other sports the next two months so great opportunity for the CFL with how bad the Jays are. I even mentioned that CFL regular season TV ratings were up last year even with the World Cup running to mid-July last year. Saying the CFL has a great chance to become what sports fans turn to this summer because there isn’t anything else to distract them…

I even mentioned I had bought a pair of tickets for Friday night’s game here in Hamilton (on top of the 4 games I already have tickets for). I mentioned it was a timely Football and Fireworks flash sale promotion from the Ti-Cats that spurred that purchase.

In another thread on attendance I posted a ton of the positive things about what the Ti-Cats do so successfully which has helped create a totally different and younger demographic for Ti-Cats games. I posted examples of a number of the things they have done to get those promotions in front of Ti-Cats fans and how good they are at that - keeping fans engaged.

I’ve posted about the number of tickets I have bought to support my local CFL team. Which sure is a weird thing to do for somebody who supposedly ‘only trashes’ or whose goal is the demise of the league.

I’m very much with the mods and other posters like FYB who challenge you guys to back up your (ridiculous, erroneous and paranoid) claims that there are any posters here who are hear to trash the CFL.

Be careful for calling out individuals. Mods can ban you for this. The “usual suspects” know who they are. Pat, we usually take fun jabs at each other in posts. I know he is a CFL fan as well as other leagues ( deep down I think you may even like the Argos ;)). But, there a few that come here (and I won’t mention names), just to trash the CFL.

…what a bunch of baloney…if you’re too chicken to call people out in public (and no, you wont’ get banned for that) then PM me with the names of these individuals who cause grief for the CFL…

If I am ever critical of the CFL and I sometimes am, it is because I love the game and want to see it improve and flourish. If I don’t like a sport I say what I want about it and then forget it, I’m done.

And Pat is an avid Ti-cat fan. Because he talks about other sports doesn’t mean he is putting down the CFL. Do what I do and don’t read the other sports posts that he writes if you don’t like that particular sport. Hell, there are whole threads I don’t even look at.

And I was at the Ti-Cats game last night. Slow first 20 minutes but then we were dominant.

With the long weekend lots of no-shows unfortunately. It looked like some recent TFC games. lol
But did get a spectacular sunset view.

Hopefully more do show up for our next home game on July 13 vs. the Stamps - because with us playing the Als again in Montreal next week - the Cats should be 4-0 going into that one.

Good job Chicago had a crowd over 15,000 in their last game, or they would be averaging just over 10k. Eek!!!
More than half teams are averaging less than 20K. Ouch!

Back to the discussion and thanks for sharing RCon:

  • The real surprise on this list is to me FC Cincinnati. Maybe if Columbus has to go, that’s the replacement team? Then again Ohio is growing so it would make sense to have two teams in Ohio.
  • With the size of their metro areas and growth, Chicago and Colorado (Denver!) look like jokes with those numbers for sure. 24% and 10% year over year declines with paltry numbers in 2018 too - yikes!
  • Greater Boston has sports saturation already, plus a short summer like in Canada, such that MLS is a very tough sell there despite the size and diverse population like other large cities. Down 22% YOY is woeful.
  • Texas - I don’t see that as a sustainable soccer market. Many fans there simply follow Mexico and La Liga and don’t give a rip about MLS either much like in Chicago.
  • Philadelphia - Living here I can tell you it’s a nice facility in Chester (otherwise NOT a nice area) from what I’ve seen and heard (never been there), but only about 1/3 of the population in the area is going to bother to go down there south of the city and away from all the other sports venues.

Apparently the Chicago Fire have reached (a very expensive) agreement to break their lease at suburban Seat Geek Stadium likely to move into Soldier Field for a few years anyways. Reportedly $65 million to break the lease that was supposed to run until 2036.

And Cincinnati have released renderings for their new 26,500 seat - $250 million dollar stadium. Gorgeous!

For Chicago, here’s an article from May for all the reasons the suburban stadium failed though it ignores a basic reality like here in Philadelphia with the stadium location in Chester south of the city. The league-low attendance says much.

More than 10 years ago here, probably longer in Chicago, the locations might not have been as bad to reach for a majority of fans. Now most fans are alienated lest they want to bother with the worst traffic ever for such drives in either area.

Soldier field gives at least a far greater number of fans better access even with area traffic.

The heavy attendance for the USA-Mexico final at Soldier Field a few weeks ago was most telling.

The team seek a new suburban location.

TSN keeping camera angles low tonight at another half empty “sell-out” in Toronto tonight.

Where was that game announced as a “sell-out?” Also, if that crowd was half empty to you, by that logic Argos games are empty.
