I don’t thing there is a QB in the CFL that I’d rate any better than mediocre so far this year. Some below that.
Definitely a lot of mediocre ones but I would rate future hall of famer Collaros as better than mediocre.
I also expect that some of the newbies will eventually turn out to be decent.
Collaros hasn’t been more than mediocre. 6 pt against the Lions isn’t all star material. You are right about the newbies. Sure hope so anyway.
He certainly isn’t the best player in the league every game but he has gone to 3 straight Grey Cups, won two and has back to back MOP’s. I think that is better than mediocre.
Ya, we know what we have with him. He’s not going to wow with stats as far as big passing yards, but rarely will he throw more int than TDs.
And all the guy does is win. I’d say that is better than medicore.
Not this year is what I’m saying.
He can still read D better than anyone, and while he’s taken more sacks this year not many can throw on the run like him. I sure as hell wouldn’t trade him for any other QB in the league.
I’d welcome him to join the Lions. Defiantly one of the better mediocre QB’s out there this year
I’m not a fan of Winnipeg but I do enjoy watching Zach Collaros. I hate all of the west teams, so when a QB in the west goes down I’m happy for the team’s loss, which is not to be confused with being happy someone got injured. If the QB plays for Calgary I’m extra happy.
I think that it has been really hard to rate QBs this year because it seems that the D-Lines are sooo far ahead of the o-lines. I think that Trevor Harris is a really good QB but he seems to running for his life on every pass down.
Here in Edmonton we’d kill for a mediocre anything.
I thought Kelly was doing OK?
the whole league is mediocre.
Yes the QB quality right now is bad, the backups are struggling and the starters not producing.
Teams are having trouble protecting their QBs because there are not enough good O-linemen out there. With the ratio rules teams are trying to put as many Canadians as possible on the O-line.
Time to reduce the ratio, these are desperate times.
Not enough QBs out there because of the USFL, XFL, the injury problems and salary restrictions, QBs are reluctant to come to Canada because of the low pay and high cost of living.
No relief until NFL cuts
Trade for Dane Evans, he’s at least “mediocre” and arguablly good and is only the backup for BC.
I definitely agree that this is an O-Line problem. In the handful games that QBs can stay in the pocket, they’ve done pretty good for themselves.
Collaros is great at throwing on the run, but in the last 2 years, he has rolled out of pressure a lot than I’d like to see. Also, the book is now out on him rolling out right and throwing right corner to Dalton Schoen making him less effective than he was.
VA looked magnificent in the game against the Bombers since we couldn’t apply any D-Line pressure.
Imagine being a rookie QB having to run away from pressure all the time. Not a recipe for success.
On a final note, what happened to our Canadian O-Line pipeline that was all the hype last decade. I presume they’re all looking to the NFL now?
The best high school O-linemen are offered NCAA scholarships. But the big problem is that the O-line is a Canadian position and most teams want 4 and the minimum 3 Canadians, and to back up the 4 Canadians at that position you need another 4.
Because of their size, these guys frequently go down with ankle and knee problems.
At least a team like the Bombers with a Canadian RB can afford to have one fewer Canadian on the O-line.
When Masoli went down in the game the other night the Redblacks put in 6 O-linemen.
The problem is the Canadian ratio, if they don’t reduce it things are only going to get worse.
Esks had great talent but they got away, such as W Jefferson, Ted Laurent, Sewell, S Lawrence, Ellington, M Betts, R Ray… . Got nothing in return.
Unfortunately, Masoli is facing injuries that are ending his career at 34. Flashing back to R Ray, we under appreciate his accomplishments, at about 36 he was able to squeak out a GC win against the highly rated and overwhelming Stamps who had a young super BoLM. Definitely R R deserves more accolades. The classy R R, stupidly trade away for nothings is a long list of mis management by the Edmonton org.
Stamps have 5 Canadians on the O-Line - Bombers 3 of 7 - Argos 4 of 7 - Ticats 5 of 7, Ottawa 5/6, Montreal 6/7
Gets back to numbers game - Of those 28 players listed above - how many would crack a roster in the Big Sky Conference or playing for NDSU, South Dakota, Montana or Montana State? We are not even talking about the SEC or Big10. And then you throw them against Division I level D linemen and we wonder why the D Linemen win those battles?
