Maurice -- "Moe The Toe" - Racine biography. Book Review from the Cheap Seats

I just finished reading the memoire of the late Maurice – “Moe the Toe? – Racine. I confess that I knew nothing at all about the man except reading his name from ancient Ottawa sports history. On a chance visit to the Ottawa Redblacks kit shop when I was last in Ottawa, I spotted the book on the shelf and decided that it would make for a good read on the long plane ride home, so I scooped it up.

There is, sadly, a paucity of books written about the Canadian Football League and even fewer about the Ottawa Rough Riders. As an aside, the Redblacks have not been around for long enough to warrant a book; then again, considering what they have accomplished since their 2014 debut, perhaps one is overdue. Had their story unfolded in the USA, an inspirational football movie would have been made about them. Suffice to say that on those rare occasions where I do encounter a book about my home team, I buy it PDQ.

The book – which was written by Racine’s son, Thom, -- follows the typical autobiographical/biographical format: from Racine’s childhood and family life; to his introduction to football; his career with the Ottawa Rough Riders; then ending with the grand finale – the crowning career achievement – when he is inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame. There are, however, a few twists and turns in the format and which makes an already interesting read, even more interesting.

The measure of a man is not so much how he evaluates himself but on how his peers evaluate him. On that count, Racine comes out of this with 5 gold stars. A lengthy chapter in the book contains Racine’s account of the men that he played with and against and within these mini-biographies, many of his teammates and opponents offer their own take on Racine; his skill on the field and his worth as a man. As I said, Racine comes out with flying colours. By all accounts, he was a superb football player, a team player with a strong worth ethic, a team leader in the truest sense, a dedicated family man and a very decent guy who never let his success go to his head.

What is most remarkable about Racine – aside from his skill -- was his longevity. He spent his entire CFL career --17 years -- with the Ottawa Rough Riders. I can’t pretend to be a football expert, but I cannot think of anyone nowadays who has been with the same team for that long. It seems to be rare these days, for a player to be with the same team even for 5 years. One thing for sure, whoever purchased a #62 Racine jersey back in the day, never had to worry about it having an expiry date, which is a common fan lament in this day and age where players are traded and shuffled around like they are bubble gum cards.

One of many things that stood out for me was Racine’s endorsement of the Ottawa Redblacks’ name. Racine writes:

“Jeff Hunt did the right thing. He went outside the box, meshed together two well-known Ottawa colours and with his marketing genius, the name will work.?

Given Racine’s long and storied history with the Ottawa Rough Riders, this should put to bed, once and for all, any doubts (and yes, I initially hated the name) about the name: “Redblacks?.

Overall, this is a great book, and one which should grace the bookshelf of any serious devotee of professional football in Ottawa. It would have been a loss to Canadian football history, had Racine’s story been relegated to a footnote or a paragraph. Racine’s story is one that needed to be told, so I am very grateful to his son Thom, for creating a lasting legacy to his father. He did a fine job of it. Thanks Mr. Racine.

I highly recommend this book. And no, I don’t get a cut of the book sales!

We have a book "The Passing Game" in our library Author is Frank Cosinteno. My spelling is likely wrong but this is the best book I have ever read on the CFL. This goes back to the time of the CFL's adding American teams to our league. I believe this book, now in The Niagara Falls Public Library, can be obtained via an inter library loan from NFPL to another library in Ontario Sourh. It is worth the effort of such.

There have been many a book written about CFL and its stars. Those I can recall just off the hop:

  1. Bud Grant - The Glacier (half NFL, half CFL)

  2. Gerry James - Kid Dynamite

  3. Dick Thornton - Pigskin Poet (actual poetry, very rare)

  4. Kenny Ploen

  5. History of Black Quarterbacks

  6. The Cosentino tome that's been mentioned

  7. Terry Evanshen - a wonderful book by June Callwood, especially since Evanshen had lost much of his memories due to concussions

  8. Don Jonas - just came out

  9. History of Bombers - by Jack Matheson

  10. History of Bombers - by Bob Irving, research by many others

  11. Leo the Lip - Leo Cahill - fantastic read

  12. Plastic Orgasm- Laverne Barnes - she was married to BC star Emery Barnes

  13. Dunigan book

  14. Willie Thomas book

  15. Pinball Clemons tome

  16. various CFL histories by various authors (1959 to 1972)

  17. History of the Grey Cup - 1986, Edmonton GC committee, amazing photos

  18. Moe Racine (as described above)

  19. History of Calgary Stampeders

  20. Various rider histories

  21. Lord Lyle Bauer - trying to explain why he hate me

  22. George Reed

  23. Sugarfoot Anderson

  24. Gene Kiniski - mostly wrestling

  25. The Rock, mostly wrestling & films

  26. Tobin Rote

  27. Joe Kapp

  28. Dancing Gabe - bomber dancer & mascot

  29. Russ Jackson - one very good biography of a legend

  30. Old Dave Spector book about Winnipeg Blue Bombers
31-50. Haven't seen them but there has to be books about the following: Jackie Parker, That unique old BC Lions GM, Warren Moon, Ron Lancaster, Doug Flutie, Wayne Shaw, Lovell Coleman, Normie Kwong, Willie Fleming, Vince Leah History of the Bombers,

Pretty sure they'll be a Milt Stegall book within the next 5 years.

Books I don't want to see would be about: Brendan Taman, Mike "Maggot" Kelly, Tim Burke, Sgt. Slaughter Greg Marshall, Wade Miller, Kyle Walters, Michael O'Shea, Drew Willy, Chris Jones, Jason Maas, Squinty Buono, Rich Stubler, Jeff Reinebold, Rod Black, Duane Forde, Sherwood Schwartz, anyone named Wettenhall, Doug Brown, Troy Westwood, Alan Ford, few more.

Here's another list of CFL and related books. Appears Sugarfoot is just coming out this year (2018 ) Some great and not-so-great tomes on this list. Note the Spector book about Winnipeg and the 1986 Edmonton Grey Cup committee book aren't on the list. Neither is Plastic Orgasm by Laverne Barnes.

Don't know how I could have missed the Angela Mosca book, either!

The Waterboy is probably one of the best books around especially if your a BC fan .

Good inside stuff of CFL and NFL admin .

Lots of good books out there on the CFL .

Russ Jackson profile of a pro by Eddie Mccabe was good for it's time . Read it as a kid many years ago .

Shameless self-promotion:

Cool never realized you were Paul Woods .

Do you have all the old CFL games under your You Tube name ?

If that’s you , Thank You .

Here's an excellent CFL book list that was supplied by PW13 on the old Riderfans website a couple years ago (before the site crashed and everything vanished):
