So what’s the scoop on marketing money now, can any team hire anyone and call it marketing money, is there no limit to how much marketing money can be spent, I see a huge potential problem developing here.
What is the genesis of your question?
Can this angle be used to hire coaches, or get around the cap etc…
I think there is a maximum amount each team can spend per year (something like $500k), but there are no rules as far as I know about the maximum amount that can be given to one player. Kelly with the Argos pulling in $100k from this and now Rourke at $200k.
Ok, well thanks, I never even knew it existed till rourke came back, him coming back to the cfl is a great marketing shot in itself.
Bot, what is Marketing Money in the context of player salaries and contracts for the CFL (Canadian Football League)?
For years the Riders were a “have not” team (not now) that could not afford to pay players. It didn’t help when teams like Calgary would routinely offer guys, who were contemplating signing with the Riders, $20K more than the Rider offer. They were so short of funds that they actually accepted grain from farmers in exchange for game tickets. But they also found jobs outside of football for players. This was a win-win because it kept the players in town over the off-season, and it gave them work experience that could help them after their football careers. Now, most players don’t work at other jobs during the season, or even in the off-season.
I don’t understand why you are responding to me. and I’m not a riders fan at all.
The specific limits were negotiated with the players in the last CBA. However, marketing money has been a thing for a while. For example, players that stick around in the off-season can get paid for community service, special events etc.
Well, at least Kelly is using his 100k properly. Look at all the doctors who evaluate him while learning all about the CFL.
I am also curious as to the exact parameters of the marketing money agreement. Several have said that there is a team limit of $500,000. Is there an individual limit? Does anyone monitor these so called marketing activities or are they just of a general nature? Does it apply only to the players (I think so) or to the management cap as well?
I share some of the trepidation of others as to the vague nature of this and how it undermines the salary cap and am not sure why there isn’t just a $500,000 increase to the salary cap.
I remain curious as to the details and also whether teams must report this (I assume so) and whether the public can obtain the reported information.
I googled the subject without success, only drawing hits to this thread. If anyone has access to detailed information on the marketing money agreement it would be great if they could post it or provide a link.
I recall Lalji saying it was unlimited.
Never said you were a rider fan. I was responding to your post about marketing money…and how the Riders got extra money for their players by finding them jobs…not exactly like marketing for the team, but extra money nevertheless, just to help them make a living.
******** If he performs.
Al Ford taught Phys Ed at my high school the entire time I was there. I think Steve Mazurak taught English there one year. I seem to recall Lancaster was a teacher somewhere too. Other players sold cars etc. It was different times, for sure.
Lancaster taught at campion college believe.
There’s a minimum teams must spend but no maximum I believe.
The last one
IMHO there should be a “level playing field” for all teams. If there is a cap, stick to it. No end-run around that figure. If a wealthy owner wants to hire a player to shine his shoes, he should have to prove that the player is truly engaged in same. Ditto for “marketing”…define marketing! It has to be real. If a player is afforded a job outside of football, or gets endorsement money, good on him…not related to cap space.
