On was on the same train, where I met a couple wearing NFL jerseys. They said that they are never going to a NFL game again. They loved their first CFL game and will be getting Stamp season tickets next year when they move up there from Seattle. So now we are even in fans lost and gained on that train
I have a simple question for you Mr. Bungle, Why do you bother watching the CFL??? All you have to say about the league is negative, negative, negative!! It appears to me you are just here to trash this league!! It is getting very tiring!! I love this league, it is far from perfect, but it is a great entertainment. If you hate this league so much, just watch something else!! Thank you
I'm not a fan of the NFL and I'm not comparing the two.
I am comparing this season to others since I've been watching ( 2005-present);
Week in and week out, these games are unwatchable. Like watching paint dry. Combined with last year's dud, It's been awhile since I've found the CFL to be enjoyable.
I recognize this is probably due to the league-wide injures to starting QBs. But, I think it also has to do with the high turnover in rosters from year to year, too many guys who don't know the rules. By the time they do learn, they're replaced and the cycle continues. The teams that are traditionally the best are those teams with lower turnover. Flags are coming at a ridiculous rate and it's because the players suck. Too many new guys.
I'm going to continue following the league wasting my time watching these boring boring games in the background as I do other things around the house while waiting for next season and the return of Durant, Ray, Lulay, Glenn, Willy etc.
I'm very frustrated by all the flags as well and while my first instinct is to blame the refs, replays more often than not show the penalties to be justified, so the problem has to be on the players and coaches. At this point in the season there's no excuse for all the lazy and stupid penalties. Sideline hits and roughing the passer are 2 that come to mind as being penalties that should not be happening at the levels they are. The league needs to come up with something better than the 5 yard rule on kicks, maybe eliminate it. That being said last night's game between Edmonton and Calgary was a classic so I'm not about to give up on the league. Good to see Reilly back.
I totally agree!! The new rules ( you can’t touch anyone anywhere or look at the referee) combined with laughable refereeing have ruined what used to be my favorite sport to watch.
Offside is offside, holding is holding but where the officiating is falling apart is the judgement calls; PI, illegal contact on a receiver (which is an unfair rule and no one seems to know how to apply it), unnecessary roughness, objectional conduct and roughing the passer. Even what should be an easy call, contacting the kicker, was horrendously blown not once but twice last night in the Calgary game. Video review is incapable of looking at a replay and coming to the correct decision, the challenge rule is unfairly applied (can challenge DPI but not OPI? Receivers NEVER interfere with defenders? BS!!!), the command centres automatic review situations seem totally arbitrary and far too many things are review.
This season has proven that the entire system is beyond repair. Drop video replay and take a couple of seasons to rebuild it properly before bringing it back (worked for the NFL back in the 90s when they had the same problem). Pay the officials more so the league can demand more of their time for training throughout the season. Game film review and discussion can be done online and through Skype without having to bring people together in one place, but officials need to give up that extra 2-3 hours per week for this and that costs money. Spend it, the investment will be worth it.
I agree with Bungle about the decline in the entertainment value of the league these last 2 seasons, but I don’t buy his Chicken Little song and dance about fans rushing to the NFL. If you are a CFL fan now you are likely an NFL fan too already. While some may walk away from the CFL (I used to watch every game until this season but I haven’t seen a full game since week 2), but they aren’t leaving for the NFL they’re just leaving.
Well said. I’ll never go back to the NFL zoo though, with it’s usually crappy over-hyped Super Bowl etc. But the last 2 seasons in the CFL have been AWFUL. The referees are clearly part-timers thinking about their day jobs, and the new rules compound the problem - then we have video review that can’t get a call right…lol.
I find the CFL as entertaining as ever, love it but I'm looking through a glass half full rather than one half empty. The flags don't bother me whatesoever. The CFL sure beats the heck out of any baseball game or pennant race, for me, that's for sure. I watch every game or at least tape it and watch it later. Both games yesterday were great and of course Friday night's game between the Cats and Argos, fantastic. Flags are part of the game, the way it is. All good. Will be taping this afts game as I'll be out but will watch it when I get home this evening.
Good points. I’m pretty sure that the league is aware of the problems noted and will make moves to try and correct them.
I do think that the league is more flexible in it’s willingness to change the rules than the NFL, but not all the changes work as hoped for, pass interference being one that needs adjustment.
If the new rules mean even one or two more penalties, they’re probably not worth it. Judging from a flow, rhythm perspective. They might be good ideas, but sometimes to make something better you have to get rid of what you like.
NBA averages about 20 fouls a game per team and the NBA is quite popular. I don't see a problem, stick with the new rules, players and refs will get used to it.
You cannot compare football and basketball. It does not work on any level. So you think there is nothing wrong with the game the way it is with the number of flags. Well good for you and you enjoy the games, but many here have voiced a different opinion and when week in week out we see calls for things that are not/should not be penalties maybe there is something to what the many are saying.
You are entitled to your opinion on the quality of the games, however, facts do not support your claim that players and refs will get used to the new rules because past the halfway point and the games and number and quality of flags is not bearing that out.
Other then the Sask/Tor game that almost broke the CFL record in penalties, I haven't been overly bothered by the penalties.
There has been some definite questionable calls, but like in all sports and leagues, the calls generally even out in the season.
As for switching to the NFL, I have watched the NFL for 30 years and enjoy watching it as I follow all football leagues (minus Arena, just can't do it). And in those 30 years I have seen plenty of really bad calls made, including last year. Remember folks the NFL is the league where the ref managed to blow the coin toss. And they have more exhibition games to work to get practice for the season.
Reduced practice time and specifically reduced practice with contact are possible reasons for the increase of lineman penalties. It would be like a boxer shadow boxing for a real fight.
I was watching TSN last week and they had a NFL analyst on, that was talking about this issue in the NFL, that the lack of practice time and contact was causing a decline in offensive lineman.
Another issue for the CFL, especially in the last two years, the amount of top players that have been injured and lost time. They are not only the most skilled, but most are leaders in the locker room holding others accountable for their actions.
The CFL as a whole; players, coaches, refs and the league need improvement, but the end of the world it isn't.
One difference that clouds judgments come down to national philosophies. Americans hype the positive. Canadians hype the negative in their own, while hyping the positive in others while ignoring the negative.
Yet a CFL game on average finishes 20 minutes quicker than an NFL game.
The CFL is 50 years older than NFL, its not going anywhere and its stronger than ever.
Lets looks at what the CFL has never done before that its doing now
The tsn tv deal worth 45 mill
Every single cfl game available in the states through espn services like espn3 and lots of tv games. And not only that they actually get good ratings there. Always middle of the pack on their network and beating MLS many times thats not to dog MLS but to say hey CFL people do care outside of canada.
For the first time in 70 years every team has a brand new stadium through renos or brand new altogether either on its way or completed.
Tv ratings still higher than nfl most weeks and over the course of the last decade id estimate cfl ratings beat nfl ratings 100-5 for the CFL.
Grey cups since 2000 grey cup 12-2 over super bowl easy. 2007 super bowl only had 3 million viewers. Another year thsr grey cup won handily over super bowl. We are talking recent history here not 1972.
I have to say ive been on a lot of message boards since i was a kid and this site is the worst for trolls worse than the Van Halen sites by far for fake accounts just to bash either Dave or Sammy lol seen it so much here. Another one post wonder
That is the favourite argument of officiating apologists and is the biggest cop out. So it’s OK if the officials blow a call because eventually they’ll blow one the other way to make up for it?
