very cool. especially since both cities have significant Punjabi speaking demographics. Harpreet Pandher from hockey night in canada. almost exactly a year after they did the first Indigenous language broadcast there.
Nice to see the league finally adapting to the world as it is now.
It’s Canada 2023, sadly we shouldn’t have to announce something like this as a first… These kind of things should be so common nobody would notice.
Only promotion I’ve heard out here is for English AM730. The Lions should look into it.
Huh??? In order to broadcast ANYTHING (sports, music, talk… in any language, English or otherwise), you first need a station willing to broadcast it (and are willing to pay for the rights). A privately owned station won’t broadcast ANYTHING unless they 1) recognize a demand for it, and 2) can make money selling advertising space.
“Announcing” this partnership brings attention; which helps with points one and two above. I hope it succeeds.
My point is music, news…and other programming is announced in several languages throughout Canada. It’s 2023, Canada is a multicultural country, it’s great news the CFL has a partnership with My Radio 580 AM, but this should’ve happened somewhere many years ago, it’s great for the CFL and will bring in many more listeners, just surprised this is a first.
Great news for the league. I had previously posted in another thread that I had written the Lions back in December about the benefits of “embracing multiculturalism”. Hopefully this becomes very popular and creates jobs across Canada.
Agree! It’s like the passive door locks on my car (close everything and it locks itself), why did it take this long to do it?
SAP has been available for years - time to put it to work in Canada…
Great idea as long as the league isn’t looking to be saved by Football India or anything
It’s like the passive rust on my car. Let it sit there and it’ll rust away to nothing.
My Devil’s advocate criticism would be: Why didn’t they do this while school was in session so they could reach out to the younger members of the Indo Canadian community? Surely they would get more listeners to a (for now) one time event if they were hyping it beforehand.
The way they did it now was give everyone 5 days warning and hoped that word would spread. How many potential listeners are on vacation with their family right now and totally missed it? Hopefully they take all that into account when they look at the ratings.
Lions made a deal to pick up the radio feed locally.
The idea could help Vancouver attendance. Edmonton has not been impressive with increasing fan attendance. V Cui has not been the miracle that was hope for. It seems like the same old, same old marketing that is getting less and less fans in the seats. Not only the team needs to improve but management is suspect.
The CFL is the Eatons of sports leagues and we all know what happened to Eatons. Argos still haven’t embraced multiculturalism…and teams like TFC and Raptors who have …are doing amazing.
Very well put, and sadly, deadly accurate
It is awesome to see BC , Calgary and Edmonton starting to embrace multicultural with the Punjabi broadcasts, etc !
Hopefully the new BC Lions owner continues to encourage newer Canadians to discover the CFL. And can help relate to them how his family emigrated from India , a couple generations ago, and embraced the CFL.
