Fair, but by point is the league has never had as good of an opportunity that is now right in front of them with thr orange guy’s anti-Canada messaging. If that can be leveraged to get Quebecers more Canadian then there is at least a chance it works for the CFL. A bit tricky, I acknowledge, given that half the teams are American, but I am not saying their pitch should be anti-American. It should be now is really great time to support something that is uniquely Canadian. It is uniquely Canadian because it is welcoming to people of all colours and faiths and nationalities.
CFL has done a good job of saying those things. “Football is for Everyone” comes to mind. They just need to add to it. The issue for me is not what they say, it’s where they say it. Saying it on TSN broadcasts during a CFL game doesn’t get you as far because people who have heard of the CFL are already watching. Same with social media posts. People who haven’t heard of the CFL aren’t “following” CFL discussions.
We’ll see if the CFL spends the money on billboards, transit related advertising etc. It’ll also take the sales department contacting the business industry and having a nationalistic approach to their pitches.
This is half true and might be market dependent. I cant speak for Toronto but like i stated before people will support minor league teams (at minor league price points) as in Edmonton with summer collegiate baseball and 15th tier summer basketball
However despite that both Canadian and American football are for a lack of better terms mutually intelligible, theres enough of a difference for people to watch NFL or NCAA over it because thats seen as real football by the majority of the world including Canada.
The 3 down diehards are in their 50-60s. It doesnt make economic sense catering to them especially since they aren’t growing the game in the sense of bring family and friends to the games as attendance and viewership is down
We can still market the CFL as canada’s football while having the same rules as Americans. We invented gridiron football thats all we need to market the CFL
Id rather see a lot of Canadians play in the CFL with American/ standard international rules than the opposite, which is what we have now.
Hard sell here in the big city
Ambitious, or perhaps time to lay off overindulging in grandpa’s cough medicine
Agreed, but that doesn’t happen. They put nationals at positions that “impact” the team the least (interior Lineman, weak side linebackers, safety, the odd rotational receiver etc) so the system I proposed actually forces teams to play the best nationals regardless of position, not just where they can best “hide” them.
If the CFL is to grow and shed it’s minor league image that many have, the most important thing is to simply put the best players available on the field for each game. Nationality, fake nationality, colour, sexual orientation or a number of other factors should not matter. Affirmative action does not belong in professional sports, no matter what you may think of that legislation otherwise.
Stop purposely shooting yourself in the foot by intentionally playing weaker players! The stars are rarely anything but American anyway so I don’t get the point. The ruse doesn’t work on me.
“minor league image”
I disagree
The CFL is the 2nd best Professional Football League on the Planet!
And I’m completely fine with that
I personally enjoy the Game(to put it mildly) and have for decades!
Yes, It could see some improvements(10th team)
I expect a very competitive League this season with any team capable of beating any other team in any given game!
What more can you ask for
I say
Keep the Canadian in the Canadian Football League
Also
I watched way more NFL stinkeroos last year than good games!
Well, 2nd best Grid Iron Professional Football League on the Planet anyhow
You mean compared to soccer
and AUSSIE RULES
I mentioned minor league image as I believe many young people look at it that way and that is what was being discussed. I personally don’t consider it minor league except in a few ways, including affirmative action, which is clearly only a thing in minor leagues and regional leagues the world over.
I agree it is the second best professional football league on the planet , not that there is a lot of competition in gridiron football. I enjoy both leagues immensely and consider them unique and one not better than the other, except obviously talent wise. If the talent was equal there would be no need for affirmative action.
Both leagues have room for improvement in their rules, although the CFL appears to be far more reluctant to make sensible changes, largely at the behest of the dying old guard and to the detriment of the young and casual fan who don’t care where the players come from and mostly don’t even know. I also don’t believe in what I consider to be the myth that one league is more exciting than the other or has more or less closer games.
Many “young people” don’t watch the NFL either,
unless it’s on their phones
Times have changed
Old geasers like us haven’t
and thats okay
Just don’t radically change our game to make it NFL light to try to attract younger fans who really don’t care like we do, IMHO
What happens when we die and there are no fans left?
Like I said , It’s the 2nd best league in the world
and I’m okay with that
I won’t care when I’m dead
We have a great League in the CFL
Changing it to NFL light, won’t make it better
IMHO It will make is worse
We do need the Canadian players and those rules in the CFL
they will all be playing flag football
Not sure enough of the “20 something” generation will agree with you.
The 20 somethings won’t put their phones down for 4 hours to watch the CFL
They can’t put their phones down for 4 minutes
The CFL is Grandpa’s sport
These 20 somethings are talking to each other
London is growing, it has a stadium and a football history with Western university. The population grows by 30000 from late August.Less competition from other sports, it really only has one other sports team and that is the Jr hockey team. Also I like the location, it’s kind of isolated between Toronto and Detroit. I know there is no perfect situation and Halifax and Quebec City are mothballed right now. I see no reason they couldn’t get 20000 a game. They could also backload a lot of there home games so they get the University students. I know you first need an owner. So let’s pretend there is someone with money looking to own a CFL team, I think London could work. Call me crazy
guessing if things go on like this long enough, we will be reduced to being nothing more than apes. Who needs to be able to talk anymore
